@kiiroitori
I have been using SpaceFM as my default for two weeks, without an issue so stability is not an issue
It is under fast development so you want to check in at the sourceforge site or RSS feed from it and get the updates
Webupd8 did it justice in that link, all of the things it talks about is why I use it.. It is highly configurable
Also IgnorantGuru is the developer, if you ever used pcmanfm-mod, then you know who he is. He is very helpful with any questions on the forum at the SpaceFM sourceforge Forum

VastOne, thanks for the additional info! I realized it doesn't run on stable as it require libgtk 2.24 and libgdk-pixbuf2.0
Are you using different repos to have it run?

@VastOne: Thanks for linking that webup8 - page. Because at the bottom there's another link to "Double Commander" http://www.webupd8.org/2011/08/double-c … panel.html.
And that's exactly what i was waitng for as a filemanger. Though i like spacefm, i miss i.e. the possibility to copy/move files from one pane to the other via keyboard-shortcuts. Now that double-commander has it all and a bit more. Feels like my beloved 2xExplorer from ole windows times.
Again: Tanks for that liink!:)

i also use Double Commander it's the closest I could find to Totalcommander on the pc - although Totalcommander runs ok under wine. I like Thunar but if it would only do a double pane - for me that is a must.

@Kuno and ChickenPie4Tea...
How did you install Double Commander under CrunchBang? Did you use the portable version? I've used the portable version and some of the functions do not work or do not work correctly (can't remember exactly). I thought about trying my hand at building from source, but the tools used for building Double Commander seem fairly unique; not something I think I would use normally to build a .deb package.
By the way, just to add my two cents, my favorite file manager has been xPlorer2 Pro; www.zabkat.com, which unfortunately is designed to run only in Windows. I think I've tried running it under Wine and if my memory serves me well, it didn't work well at all.

I took the maverick-deb from here: https://launchpad.net/~alexx2000/+archive/doublecmd
Works just fine.

spacefm;
yeah, it's one i've been keeping an eye on from time to time since discovering it. i heard about it in some other thread here.
seriously impressive. and it's screenshots page shows it off really well.
i thought sunflower and others showed great promise... but spacefm... mmm. whole other league.
... maybe it will even be in the repo someday. ^_^

Did anyone else think this would be a thread about a radio station that only plays space music?

@Digit, I think once Wheezy goes stable, spaceFM will then be added to the repos... There are dependency issues running it under Statler Stable.

That would make it easier for people to try since they would not need to get dependencies from testing/unstable.
I believe the reason it can't be installed in stable is because stable does not have the "libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0" package.
I am running a debug build of the next branch of spacefm in gdb to help with testing so packages don't matter to me though.

I saw that link on the Double Commander site, but I wasn't sure if I could use those debs since they're for Ubuntu. I also wasn't sure which deb to use under CrunchBang. Thanks for the clarification.

@Kuno...
I downloaded the Maverick deb file, but when I attempted to install it I got an unsatisfiable dependency error regarding libgdk-pixbuf2.xxx. Upon searching the packages at the Debian site, I discovered that the libgdk-pixbuf2.xxx pkgs are in Debian testing, not Debian stable. I'm running Crunchbang Statler with backports. I guess I'll have to wait until Wheezy is released as stable and try again.
Thanks anyway.

^ There is one for DropBox now?
There was not one before so I just made my own.
It was very limited so I did not release it.

Debian-based
deb packages are available in Downloads (to save a file, click on its filename and click 'View Raw'), and are also available in the author's PPA. These convenience deb packages contain the source code and will build and install SpaceFM automatically on most Debian-based distros. $TMPDIR (usually /tmp) must NOT be mounted noexec.
Or easily build your own deb package from source using the instructions in the README file.
NOTE: SpaceFM requires libgtk >= 2.24. Debian Squeeze and Ubuntu 10.04 users also may not be able to install SpaceFM due to repositories missing package libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0

I got Spacefm installed in Statler/Squeeze by first installing those required dependencies mentioned above. Just don't know anymore, if to do so i enabled the testing repo or if i downloaded those packages and installed them via dpkg.... At least it did not break Statler!
