As topic said, i really want to downgrade to the more stable skype.
Everytime someone writes to me or i try to write to them it closes.
if i start skype in terminal i get the messege:
aborted (SIGABRT)
i really need skype atm, so tips to downgrade would be much appriciated. googled around for hours now

First, before you installed the new version, did you also remove the older one? I hope you took the .deb file and not some obscure repo for Skype.
Downgrading is not possible AFAIK if you do not have the older .deb file somewhere saved.
Someone that still uses version 2 has to send you the .deb. I am not sure if you can find it somewhere else as Debian does not provide any Skype packages.
But I think we should try to solve the problems in first place.
My last resort would be to delete the config, remove this directory and start fresh:
~/.SkypeIt is a hidden file, Ctrl + h will show it.
Restart Skype, fill in your user details and see if it works.
Also, do use 32 or 64 bit version? Did you installed the correct version for your architecture?
It could be possible to download the Skype version from the Canonical Partners or something repo or even from Linux Mint. They still use the older beta version and it should be more or less compatible with Debian but do not use any PPAs, just the .deb file.
It would be interesting too to see how you configured your sound with Skype, that is often a reason for headaches.

This site provides packages for Ubuntu. I do not recommend that way!
We should really first try to trouble shoot.
Seems pretty popular, your problem, even with the beta version:

as ivanov said, remove the 4.0 version first. Then
wget -c http://www.pc-freak.net/files/skype-debian_2.2.0.35-1_amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i skype-debian_2.2.0.35-1_amd64.debOffline
FIrst of all, i never tried the beta version in waldorf, only in stable. But ive have tried version 4 in stable with same problem as now.
The skype 4 version i use now are for debian 6 32-bit from skype.com
okej, first i autoremove skype from terminal. Then i delete the .skype directory from my ~/home directory.
i dont want to download that crap skype again, but sure if u know what to do to get it to work.
ive coukld write the first day , then when i click on a friend it just shuts down.
machinebacon, i guess that would install the 64-bit version right?
iam on 32-bit (i386)

oh guys, oh guys, oh guys! I love your brains (and sources).
spent about 15 minutes using the new version - reminded me fast enough, why am I still sticking to the 3.8 on Windows, when I have to switch systems...
so yupp, just wanted to say thanks for providing links to the 2.2 version - now it's safely saved on HD, just in case!

I need to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for providing that file! Skype 4 was driving me up a wall within minutes.

I'm willing to host files for a bit longer, so for anyone visiting this page 4 months from now, pick one of these:
2.2 32-bit: http://nexussl.s3.amazonaws.com/skype_2 … 1_i386.deb (Source: Mint repos)
2.2 64-bit: http://nexussl.s3.amazonaws.com/skype-d … _amd64.deb (Source: machinebacon)
2.1 32-bit: http://nexussl.s3.amazonaws.com/skype_ubuntu_i386.deb (Source: Ubuntu repos)
Since I had Skype 4 thrust in my face, I've been asking around and building up a small collection of Skype 2.x installers. If anyone has a version I'm missing and doesn't want to host it themselves, feel free to contact me and I'll put it up!

I also just noticed that I had a 32-bit version floating around. If anyone wants that, it's at http://nexussl.s3.amazonaws.com/skype_ubuntu_i386.deb.

I generally have better luck with 2.2, but that could depend on a number of things. I believe they're both considered to be equally stable, 2.2 just had more bugfixes.

@MB Silly question but which one of those do I need?

I copied & installed from here, it's the right architecture for me. And now indeed, at least i'm able to start skype.
But i don't have any luck with pulseaudio and the microphone and skype. Now, i googled a bit around, and micro and pulseaudio seems to be a relatively common issue. I did not have any luck up to now with my attempts to solve it.
Someone out here, who has an idea? TIA!

^ Go to the preferences in Skype, go to sound or something like this. Adjust the settings, e.g., I am not sure, no Pulse here, but maybe you have to choose it from there. And probably disable that Skype chooses the sound output for you.
Offline
Options -> Sound Devices -> "Pulse" for all selections. Untick "Allow Skype to adjust my mixer levels". Make sure that in Pulse (pavucontrol) you have no "dummy output" chosen and Skype is listed as active software/stream.

^ I could not say it better.
