Ubuntu Refugee...

Hello all,

My name is Nate and while I have been using Crunchbang for several months, I have decided to finally join the forums. I usually do not join forums unless I have to but from what I have seen these forums are the best linux forums out there. Everyone is kind and the mods are great.

-- EDIT: As my subject says I am an Ubuntu Refugee displaced by stupid decisions made concerning not just Unity but KDE (or now lack thereof), GNOME3 (Not Canonical's fault but still not suited for my style of working on a computer), and the fact that this most recent LTS is not even close to stable in my opinion. I knew I needed something minimal and I needed something Debian or SUSE. I encountered Crunchbang and I haven't been happier with a Distro to date. The only thing i miss is PPAs, but maybe someone has an answer about that here.

I hope to speak with many of you soon.

-Nate

Welcome to #!

(edit) as ivan said right after, (and many will probably follow) if you tell us what you want to install, we can get it done without the evil ppas. smile

Re: Ubuntu Refugee...

Welcome to the community Nate!
I wish you a good stay. If you have any special questions just ask and we will like to answer them.

There are no PPAs for Debian and it is considered bad practice to use them as they are not compatible with Debian but if you know what you do, you could add them at your own risk. But I would never recommend it.

Maybe just say what apps you miss from PPAs and we can find a solution?

Re: Ubuntu Refugee...

Well most applications in Debian Stable are perfectly fine for what i need to do, but I use Gimp heavily and 2.8 is such an improvement over 2.6 that it is hard to go back.

Other than that really I am very content with squeeze's applications. I do sometimes however use backports to keep things a bit more up to date.

Welcome!

I came back to CrunchBang for much the same reasons. I was running Ubuntu 11.10 with MATE as the DE, and I thought it was pretty good, if not perfect yet. It was, at the very least, stable. The LTS was not stable. Not even with Unity eviscerated and MATE stuffed in it's place. Ubuntu is being stretched by a compromise. Instead of splitting up the project into smaller groups with different goals, such as desktop users, phone users, tablet users, etc, they're trying to consolidate their efforts into a "one size fits all" distribution that, frankly, hasn't been on par with Debian for stability since 10.04 was released.

Glad to see someone else who felt how I did about it.

I installed Waldorf onto my system last night and I have to say for a testing distro it feels really stable. May I say I am impressed. I guess in that case Crunchbang has everything I need and then some :-)
