I do see words like UP and BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST (not shouting here; it's actual caps)
HWaddr 00:50:etcetera is perhaps an IP address?

There should be a linelike this:
inet addr:192.168.0.226 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0Though the addresses will not be the same.
Try to run
apt-get install -fbootinfoscript - emacs primer - I ♥ #!

Yay
It is trying to complete the dist-upgrade that you started 10 days ago.
If it finishes normally, but only if it finishers normally, run
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgradeagain.
If that finishes normally your system should be fully upgraded.

Night JP
and thank you so much!
I'm dist upgrading now; will edit later to give full report
EDIT: just for the record, at the end of dist-upgrade there were errors:
/var/cache/apt/archives/slim_1.3.3-2_i386.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/tint2_0.11+svn20111022-3_i386.deb
E: Subprocess /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
ctrl d brought me straight to GUI login
after login noticed in tint2 there's twice the same icon for eth0 active
super+x alt+r kept hanging so I canceled that and went
sudo shutdown -h nowBooted in the most recent #! entry and... here I am
