[SOLVED] gnumeric formulas vs Excel

Hi all,

I am looking for someone who might use gnumeric more than the average user. Higher level formulas etc.

I am working on updating my Excel skills with a home course but am curious to know if anyone knows if the formulas in say Excel 2007-2010 are the same as the formulas in gnumeric.

Looking to see if the same verbage is the same between aps ( vlookup etc )

Any help would be appreicated.

Thanks,

Zach

Re: [SOLVED] gnumeric formulas vs Excel

As far as I've used Excel, formulas were nearly identical. I was setting up multiplication and total columns for large purchases and expense spreadsheets. I wouldn't know about seriously advanced formulas into trig or something though.

Re: [SOLVED] gnumeric formulas vs Excel

Can't speak for gnumeric, but I know in Openoffice calc the syntax is the same (perhaps some minor variants here and there). My advice is to just try out your formulae of choice, refer to the help docs to get them working if necessary.

Open http://projects.gnome.org/gnumeric/functions.shtml, choose a function and see, if the description page says

Microsoft Excel Compatibility
This function is Excel compatible.

Re: [SOLVED] gnumeric formulas vs Excel

my dad's an excel guru.  ^_^  he called up microsoft for help once i recall, where they couldnt help him, and he ended up teaching them loads of stuff.

i recall he tried openoffice's spreadsheet thing once, and was disapointed that his extremely advanced formulas and macros didnt work.  idk about gnumeric tho.  one can get rather involved and deep with excel, as my dad has.

just thought i'd throw in that little anecdote about my dad's insane level of excel-ence.  redundant as it is after nore's post and link.  smile

Re: [SOLVED] gnumeric formulas vs Excel

Don't rely 100 % on Gnumeric documents though. Microsoft has added some functions on Excel 2007 and 2010 and changed some others. (List of functions that are not backward compatible.)

Rumour has it, that in Excel 2003 days Gnumeric functions were so compatible with Excel, that they had the same bugs.

But also remember that most functions can be reproduced with clever use of formulae.

Re: [SOLVED] gnumeric formulas vs Excel

I recently purchased a home course to kinda work through some Excel stuff.... and they have some free spread sheets that might be helpful for you to see if gnumeric would work.

they have some out at www.LearnMicrosoftExcel.com I just downloaded and am running tests on.

Some things are slightly different... but overall it seems to be pretty compatable.
