Re: HOWTO - Have a Desktop terminal, and manage Terminator profiles

@tokou - if you have a recent version of tint2, you can put "wm_menu = 1" in your config and just right-click on tint2 to get your Openbox menu.

Re: HOWTO - Have a Desktop terminal, and manage Terminator profiles

Sorry for the thread revival (found this through the howto page) but I've done this under XFCE Statler and it's... mostly worked. For some reason, it's claiming that -p and --profile aren't valid arguments - and so, isn't loading the necessary transparency. This would not be such a problem, but as a result it's obscuring my Conky widget... which is kind of annoying. Anybody got any ideas?

Re: HOWTO - Have a Desktop terminal, and manage Terminator profiles

@Syntax: strange. if you do 'terminator --help' or 'man terminator', does it tell you that --profile is an option?

Re: HOWTO - Have a Desktop terminal, and manage Terminator profiles

Yes, actually - but it never recognises it when I enter it. Odd.

Just in case there's something I'm missing here, here's the terminal output:

syntax@TheBlackBox:~$ terminator --help
Usage: terminator [options]

Options:
  -h, --help show this help message and exit
  -v, --version         Display program version
  -m, --maximise        Maximise the window
  -f, --fullscreen Make the window fill the screen
  -b, --borderless      Disable window borders
  -H, --hidden Hide the window at startup
  -T FORCEDTITLE, --title=FORCEDTITLE
                        Specify a title for the window
  --geometry=GEOMETRY Set the preferred size and position of the window (see
                        X man page)
  -e COMMAND, --command=COMMAND
                        Specify a command to execute inside the terminal
  -x, --execute Use the rest of the command line as a command to
                        execute inside the terminal, and its arguments
  --working-directory=DIR
                        Set the working directory
  -r ROLE, --role=ROLE Set a custom WM_WINDOW_ROLE property on the window
  -l LAYOUT, --layout=LAYOUT
                        Select a layout
  -p PROFILE, --profile=PROFILE
                        Use a different profile as the default
  -d, --debug Enable debugging information (twice for debug server)
  --debug-classes=DEBUG_CLASSES

  --debug-methods=DEBUG_METHODS
                        Comma separated list of methods to limit debugging to
syntax@TheBlackBox:~$ terminator_desktop --profile Desktop -b --geometry 1920x1080+0+24

bash: --profile: command not found
syntax@TheBlackBox:~$
** (terminator_desktop:9390): WARNING **: Binding '<Shift><Control>a' failed!
Unable to bind hide_window key, another instance/window has it.

I've also tried all the variations of the option. Doesn't recognise any of them.

(I'm not fussed about the binding, that's probably a glitch and I don't use it anyway)

Re: HOWTO - Have a Desktop terminal, and manage Terminator profiles

what if instead of:
$ terminator_desktop --profile <etc>

you do:
$ terminator --profile <etc>

i believe that is the problem here. bash does not recognize 'terminator_desktop' because it is nothing, and therefore the option --profile does not exist either.

(if this works i have just solved my first Linux problem - for someone else that is!)

Re: HOWTO - Have a Desktop terminal, and manage Terminator profiles

Hmm! Interesting - it does load the profile. Of course, it's still just a regular Terminator window with extra transparency... which only increases the amount that the desktop shows through, not any of the intervening windows.

Re: HOWTO - Have a Desktop terminal, and manage Terminator profiles

afaik, the desktop terminal (i've used this tutorial myself as well) IS just a regular Terminator window with extra transparancy, and a set width and height, and its on the desktop behind all other windows. so, i'm not sure what you mean by 'other intervening windows' that need to 'shine through' as well, but aren't those other windows in the foreground, and your desktop terminal in the background, on the desktop? isn't this what it's supposed to do?

Re: HOWTO - Have a Desktop terminal, and manage Terminator profiles

Sorry if that was misleading - I was just running the terminal in the foreground and observing that the transparency only applied to the background image, nothing else.
The problem is that while the terminator_desktop is behind all the windows, it is not behind the Conky widget, which, if the screenshots are to be believed, ought to be in front of it.

Re: HOWTO - Have a Desktop terminal, and manage Terminator profiles

I just tried this under Waldorf it works but you need to change the composting manager a bit. Instead of the default

cb-compositor --start && \

located in the autostart file you need this:

compton -fF -t-5 -l-5 -r4.2 -o.55 -D2 -m.83 &

Hope it helps someone out.

Re: HOWTO - Have a Desktop terminal, and manage Terminator profiles

Hi,

thank you first of all, Donat, it worked great (although I used teminators own profile and xfce4-terminal to set the rest)!
Now I have just have one little thing which bothers me quite a lot. In the lower right corner of the transparent terminal there is that small triangle for resizing the terminal window. Its just ugly and right in the center of my view. I have searched around the web and found virtually nothing that realy helped in any way. As far as I know all I might have to do is set the desktopterminal to unresizable and it should autohide. I just don't get how I could do that. I can maximize it, than it's gone, but than it's maximized and I don't want that either. I thought of tricking it into thinking it was maximised, but my attempts failed.
I guess I could also switch the GTK-Theme but I like it so much.
Does anyone else have an idea?
Why isn't there an xml-Tag fo the rc.xml that simply prevents windows from being resizable?
Heres a screenshot: http://www.mercuryproductions.de/kram/handle.jpeg
Thanks in advance smile.

/edit:
Ok, I solved the problem as a whole:

this is what I did:
edit the .gtkrc-2.0.mine
add the following lines:

style "default-style"
{
  GtkWindow::resize-grip-height = 0
  GtkWindow::resize-grip-width = 0
}

class "GtkWidget" style "default-style"

restart X or openbox and enjoy smile

Source: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/05/disa … untu-11-04

resizing can now be a bit of a pain if you do it with a mouse.

Re: HOWTO - Have a Desktop terminal, and manage Terminator profiles

Ooh! Dead thread revival.

So, I've mostly gotten this to work, except I get an error message that reads:

aliceinmadness@yggdrasil:~$ terminator_desktop --profile Desktop -b --geometry 550x500+0+24

** (terminator_desktop:2359): WARNING **: Binding '<Shift><Control>a' failed!
Unable to bind hide_window key, another instance/window has it.

I opened my rc file but I couldn't actually find where this assignment...is there a way I can just change it in the command line or get the above command to use a different binding in the first place?

Everything else pretty much works. It's not completely transparent though. Not sure if that has something to do with the error I'm getting.

Oops.

I was having this problem too with Waldorf and it turns out to be compton putting a shadow there, but I resolved it with the following:

  1. cp /etc/xdg/compton.conf ~/.config/

  2. edit ~/.config/compton.conf and add: shadow-exclude = [ "g:e:Terminator_desktop" ];

  3. edit ~/.config/openbox/autostart and change terminator_desktop call to: (sleep 5s && terminator_desktop --profile Desktop -b --geometry 1670x920+0+30) &
    (or whatever your geometry parameter is)
    Also, I had to put this line above the call to conky or sometimes it wouldn't launch, this may be unrelated though.

EDIT: I had to up the sleep to 5s on a fresh boot since the system is working harder than when I just log out and in.

Re: HOWTO - Have a Desktop terminal, and manage Terminator profiles

is there a way to enjoy this trick for X-org desktop manager users?
Since I doesn't use "openbox" ( I failed to make it to work from GNOME), it would be great if this trick could be adaptable to X-org...

Re: HOWTO - Have a Desktop terminal, and manage Terminator profiles

Thanks a bunch for this tutorial!

Works great for me, except I had problems with it not being fully transparent. All good now thanks Ozack and post #37 smile

Edit: Seems I forgot to search page 2 for answer to my transparency issue. Removed question for help now that I solved it thanks to Ozack's post #37.
