Is that all of the output? It doesn't continue past that?
Edit: I asked a silly question that shouldn't matter here because VLC doesn't use gstreamer.
Try searching for that library in synaptic.

In terminal, enter:
apt-cache policy vlcIf the version is from debian-multimedia.org, read: http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=79210

chroma appears to be audio related... That would be a little weird if it was your main problem.

Following MB's link, also see if your video plays in mplayer or another media program.
As I said VLC doesn't use gstreamer, which sometimes is a good thing, but sometimes gstreamer based players can do stuff VLC can't.

That sounds very familiar to me. That happens when you install VLC from Squeeze and then pull the multimedia stuff and you get VLC from that repo. Not sure why.

No vlc in the backports.
Oh, just noticed: you posted in the testing/unstable section - no matter really.
You could download Waldorf and put it on a stick and try to play the files in Waldorf (vlc is there in version 2.0)
Or try a set of other players (mplayer, xine, totem) though that's not really a fix, just a workaround
