Re: The definitive guide to proprietary AMD graphics drivers

Could someone notify me when this works again?

Tried it today, no hope. Still gave me that error that's been mentioned up there.

Good, AMD is such a piece of ultimate crap.

Oh, nice. I'm having a webcam call for about an hour now:

This is really useful stuff. If only Nvidia had made a decent agp card.

It should appear in a week. On average, it appears between 20-25th of the month. I'm looking forward to it as well, as it's said to bring xorg 1.12 support.

is it on yet?

Re: The definitive guide to proprietary AMD graphics drivers

Nup, there won't be a 12.5 release, they're going straight for 12.6. There are beta builds, but I haven't looked for them. One should be in the Sid repos I think.

Re: The definitive guide to proprietary AMD graphics drivers

I tested it on my laptop and it works good with Xorg 1.12 (don't know which version you have @ Debian though) and kernel 3.3. There are patches to get it working on 3.4 but I didn't look into those yet.

The only issue I had was flashing in Mplayer when watching a movie.

Re: The definitive guide to proprietary AMD graphics drivers

Cheers for this el_koraco!

I just used this manual to run it on Mint 13 (I know, not #!, but debian-through-ubuntu based, so I thought "why the hell not?") and now I came into Limbo...

Kernel 3.2.0-25 won't boot, init just sits there after failing "Loading cpufreq kernel modules", older kernel 3.2.0-24 does boot, even has the setting radeon.modeset=0, but the mouse won't work. Doh!

Rebooted into 3.2.0-25 recovery mode, and start sfgxi again, after which everything went fine, albeit Cinnamon seems to have dropped into some sort of fallback-mode, but that's a different issue I'll look into shortly.

Cheers,

Anakin

Re: The definitive guide to proprietary AMD graphics drivers

when you say 'not booting' you mean not getting to desktop, or login...?
i'm not much of an expert, but have you tried changing your boot parameters?

[ 197.217] Kernel command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.2.0-2-amd64 root=UUID=a5f4e4be-8d35-496f-9fbc-f289e9141990 ro quiet nomodeset radeon.modeset=0

maybe get rid of the modeset stuff. AFAIK if its working (my ATI 9200 is, after running SMXi) i dont recall needing any boot codes...
anyone?

Good Luck

Re: The definitive guide to proprietary AMD graphics drivers

Did you create an xorg.conf file? E.g. did you run aticonfig --initial?

Re: The definitive guide to proprietary AMD graphics drivers

I ended up installing fglrx-driver. For whatever reason smxi isn't working for me. I just get a washed out screen.

hey guys, I'm new to Crunchbang and when installing this driver using smxi I always get the error:

"Dkms part of installation failed"

So the driver actually is installed but there is no 3d acceleration and I cannot watch videos with vlc or xine. My Graphics Card is Mobility Radeon HD 4650 and Im using backports crunchbang x86.Help is very much appreciated.

I have this same unfortunate issue. headers is completely updated. Anyone have any recommendations? I could not use the current 12-6 install due to the fact that the Radeon HD 4650 is no longer supported. I had to install the 12-4 driver.

Re: The definitive guide to proprietary AMD graphics drivers

OK, I've finally taken the plunge and installed proprietary drivers (using "older fglrx", since smxi has dropped support for my Radeon HD4250).  Now...how do I take full advantage of the additional processing power?

Enable Tear Free Desktop, maybe up the 3D stuff. But it pretty much takes care of itself.

Re: The definitive guide to proprietary AMD graphics drivers

So there aren't like 82 cores in the GPU that can be pressed into service for non-graphics applications like there are on Nvidia cards?

Hell no, the 4250 is worse than your average Intel GPU.

Re: The definitive guide to proprietary AMD graphics drivers

@beadmaze and others with unsupported boards:
I used el_koraco's modified manual method using smxi to clean up the system but then grabbed the 12.6 LEGACY driver from AMD's website and ran it manually.
This worked for my Lenovo x100e w/ HD3200 gpu.  I had to pretty up the tty's by fiddling with /etc/default/grub (I think El_K's guide is pretty much what I did):

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet nomodeset radeon.modeset=0"

and set the resolution manually:

GRUB_GFXMODE=1366x768  #my native resolution#
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep

It has goofed up the login screen a bit sending the login off center and the login box shows.  But my lappie runs cooler, the fan seldom runs.  That has gained me around an hour on battery life... pushing 3.5 hrs.  I'm back to where I was on Statler (now on SId + Linux 3.2.0-3-amd64).
Hope this helps.

Re: The definitive guide to proprietary AMD graphics drivers

Anyone got fglrx working on Wheezy?

what i mean is this!! So far so good, i can somewhat install a driver, but the fun stops quick, as my fans on my 6850 runs at 100% tongue

According to the link above, they dont really seems to keen on fixing it smile

So 1. Debian stable (older #! based on stable) or 2. (not gonna mention distro) where newest fglrx and xorg 1.2-4 works just fine. I really want to run #! to be honest. If i was deaf i wouldnt care, but... DAMN THAT NOISE! lol

CPU : FX-6100 @ 4.0 GHz -.- RAM: Vengeance 8Gb DDR3/1600
GFX: GeForce 660 Ti -.- PSU: Corsair TX 650 + Corsair H80i
CASE: Corsair Carbide 500R -.- HDD: 120Gb Intel SSD
NAS: 6Tb (Raid5 ftw!) <-- Thats 6 x 2Tb WD Blacks smile

Install the newest driver from AMD. It does support Xorg 1.12.
