How To: use code, quote, url, and image tags

I wrote this topic so I (and anyone else who wants to) can point new users to one place for more information on using tags.

Code

New users often post questions, and answering the questions usually involves having the new user run commands in a terminal and post the output. It's much easier to read if the output is enclosed in code tags. Code tags are also useful for posting scripts and other code (surprise!).

The easiest way to produce code tags is to use the buttons provided by the forum. Just above the text entry box in the little row of buttons on the left, find the button that looks like this: <--> Pressing this button will produce code tags in your post. It's a little complicated to show examples for this, because if I simply use the tags, they will change the output but will not show up in the post. Code tags are delimited by square brackets [] -- in this example I will show the code tags, but insert a space after the word "code".

REMOVE THE SPACE BETWEEN THE WORD "CODE" AND THE ] IF YOU FOLLOW THIS EXAMPLE
(sorry for the shouting, but people didn't seem to be paying attention before)

For example:

[code ]
lspci | grep VGA
[/code ]

Remember to remove the space between "code" and "]", and the output will look like this:

lspci | grep VGA

You can put more than one line between the code tags, and it will all be formatted in monspace and easier for people to scroll and read.

Quote

This one's easy. Use quote tags when you want to quote another poster (or another site, or anything else). There is also a button for this, just above the text entry box; it's a little balloon with a quote (") in it. Press the button and you get empty quote tags. Quote tags are also produced when you use the "Quote" button to reply to a post. Here is an example (using an extra space again):

[quote ]
It is a common mistake to think that every developer wants their project to be widely popular smile
[/quote ]

remember to remove the space between "quote" and ], and the output will look like this:

[quote ]
It is a common mistake to think that every developer wants their project to be widely popular smile
[/quote ]

If you want to show where the quote comes from, use "quote=", like this:

[ quote=corenominal]
It is a common mistake to think that every developer wants their project to be widely popular smile
[ /quote]

remember to remove the space between [ and "quote", and the output will look like this:

URL tags (links)

Ivanovnegro wrote a good topic on this already. It's here.

Remember to test your links after you post them to make sure they work and go where you want them to go.

Images

Kbang wrote a good topic on this. It's here.

I will just add here that I like postimage.org -- it produces the correct code for forum images with thumbnails and allows you to easily copy and paste the code.

You'd have thought people would be able to figure it out by clicking the funky icons on top of the reply box.
Either way, nice guide smile

But you forgot the most important tag: COLOUR!!!!

how to use a picture sig along with your user name - I havent looked that up yet!
I always imagine it wouldn't work for long as where ever you uploaded your picture - wouldnt it get erased after a time. So where would be a good place to put it?

Edit - oops I see it's simple - go to your profile details and click on avatar and upload a pic
the hardest part is keeping the image to only 60by60 pixels and no more than 10kb

^ i just have my avatar uploaded on my personal server. you could also use gravatar i think, but haven't checked it out much. another possibility for persistent hosting would be Google Drive, which is pretty nice.

Course you can! Have you seen those graphical tutorials on dA? Hope you don't mind pidsley - I've converted your tut into a graphic....

Now, if you can make the url's work on a graphic..... (Someone else can do the html!)

Happy GIMPing smile
