My waldorf experience (so far)

well, first of all, lemme just say:
waldorf is so sexy my eyes bleeeeeed! smile its running smoothly. some insight of my HW, for papanominal

intel core i5 2500 with integrated intel graphics
8gb ram
motherboard:
asus p8z68-v

i also have a wireless keyboard and on statler the volume keys didnt work, wich on baby waldorf, all is running smile
same goes with other partiotions that are now viseble and bootbale with on click. statler didnt detected those smile
still one thing does bug me and annoys me: "Y numlock isnt on on boot?" it really annoyes me i have press numlock every single boot time. any chance on fixing this?
one more thing: upon suspension, the welcoming screen isnt that sexy :\ any chance of making default welcoming screen available also upon suspendind screen?

other than that, so far all things running smoothly.

kudos
PS: i hope i made myself clear big_smile

Have you tried installing numlockx?

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install numlockx

Once installed, add something like below to your Openbox autostart script:

numlockx on &

one more thing: upon suspension, the welcoming screen isnt that sexy :\ any chance of making default welcoming screen available also upon suspendind screen?

Are we talking about the xscreensaver dialog? The one with the red flames?

worked like a charm, mate! smile but i really think you should contemplate making this default. or kinda like wheezy does it. wink

the one with the flames. i really think that instead of the flames, it would be better to have the default welcoming screen like the one when we first boot the machine. other than that, it's just awesome.

well mate i've always been to keen to try linux. but i just never had the machines to it. i always had laptops with amd graphics cards, wich dont like linux dat much. and i have a laptop with hybrid graphics, dat also donsnt like linux. sad so last year i maed myself this desktop, of course for windows purposes since all my linux experiences had failed. until i decided to try once more. debian it was, allas magic! smile but i later on discovered open box and rediscovered crunch, wich was by this time debian based <3 so win win win, with #! big_smile this machine is now super duper fast and stabel, even with waldorf at this point. smile

Re: My waldorf experience (so far)

I think (!) the LED can be enabled by editing as root

/etc/kbd/config

and changing the

#LEDS=+num

to

LEDS=+num

By the way, in this file you can also enable a neat little console clock: change

#DO_VCSTIME=yes

to

DO_VCSTIME=yes

Personally, I disagree with it myself and think it goes against the free software philosophy. I would be interested to know what others think.

Re: My waldorf experience (so far)

^^ i agree, i think it is a ridiculous restriction to have. that said, about the first thing i uninstall is xscreensaver. it is one of the fugliest apps ever (which is fitting, as it seems that whenever an app has an 'x' prefix, it is fugly - xclock being the prime example).

i say, Cel*ne D*on them. either use a different screensaver, or hack their code smile

So... when you uninstall xscreensaver... do you replace it with something else? Or you just don't need it?

well, if that could have the same beahaviour that X has, but if one can customize it, it would be great, to have #! in asci written wink
kudos

EDIT: one more thing concerning waldorf:i cant set the wallpaper by "right-click+set as wallpapaer" weather the image is on hdd or on chromium.
kudos

Re: My waldorf experience (so far)

I usually don't bother with screensaver application at all - what is the point in it anyway?

Re: My waldorf experience (so far)

xscreensaver isn't used just for screensaver functionality.  It's also used, although I believe there's on option not to use it,  when you lock your screen or when you hibernate your machine.

Re: My waldorf experience (so far)

^ Yep, that's the only case where I use it, to lock my screen. Though, it seems xscreensaver is needed to make xfe4-power-manager to work correctly at least hear on my system, so it runs here on boot.

But you can indeed remove it and use other stuff.

Re: My waldorf experience (so far)

I don't purge xscreensaver, simply disable it and use http://tools.suckless.org/slock to lock the screen and xfce4-power-manager for the rest.

If you are talking about the login screen, Waldorf is using SLim window manager, not gdm as in Statler. I think you use F1 to get some choices (someone will correct me I'm sure smile )

Re: My waldorf experience (so far)

If you want to reboot or shutdown from the (SLiM) login screen in waldorf:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/SL … _from_SLiM

(this entire topic will give you more information about SLiM, but I linked to the part about the "actions" you're missing from GDM)

If you don't have a root password set (you should) do this:

sudo passwd root

and enter the root password when you are prompted.
