Cellphones are day after day more similar to computers. So, I was wondering, is it actually possible to install linux on them? I read about projects like neo freerunner, but I didn't get the feeling they really took off.
Any opinions?

actually I was thinking about something more like uninstalling the manufacturer's os and installing linux. I read that ubuntu for android works only when docked.

yes i get it you need a phone to root and install any os of your choice on it which supports the phone
and no ubuntu for android also works while not docked but it has limited functionality
what? do you expect ubuntu-unity desktop on a 4 inch screen if you are thinking so then let me tell you it will be too crammed things like enlightenment wm may work but well, i don't see how you are going to do it to
ubuntu android since it is still not released, it's just a prospect in development

I thought tizen was linux-based. Also webos is linux-based. There is another - I forget

(by Mozilla???). Finally, there is replicant

@apm I actually don't need a linux phone. And is of course bananas thinking that one could use xfce or gnome on a phone. The matter is that since cellphones are so similar to pcs, having a foss linux distribution on a phone would be very interesting. Not a fork like android.
@sheng very interesting info. Thank you!
@zalew I think I'll have to read some documentation

That new Nokia 900 was going to be a MeeGo phone but for whatever reason, they went with Windows. It would have been a linux phone as you are thinking. Android is not IMO. I have a Samsung Nexus S and Android stinks IMO. I don't even tell people that it is a Linux kernel. I'm just like "yea, it's android whateve..."

Im sure i saw a busy box map in the android market recently.
And i still call it android market, not google play, so anyone who thinks im not aware of the name change, you're wrong, i just think the new name is (a swear word i can't say anymore.).

Check http://www.openmoko.com/
its an open source mobile/cell phone. But I wont bet on it.
If you want a phone that can do anything it wasn't supposed to do, look no further...Nokia n900.
