Problem with coping text. Clipboard emptied when app closes.

I have this annoying problem...
When I open a program and I copy some text, fine, I can paste anywhere. But if I copy text, close the app from where I copied the text and try to paste somewhere, I can't.
It's like the clipboard is cleaned when I close an app.
I have Parcellite as clipboard manager. So I have to go to Parcellite and check the clipboard history and select what I copied. I'm tired of doing this. What can I do to fix this? I want the clipboard not to be cleaned when I close the app.

TIA

Re: Problem with coping text. Clipboard emptied when app closes.

From parcellite's website:

Primary means mouse copy/paste, and this is the X ‘primary’ clipboard
Ctrl-C is the keyboard copy/past, and this is the X ‘clipboard’ clipboard
Syncronize means if you copy with either, it pastes immediately to the other one.
If not syncroized, if you use Ctrl-C, then try to paste with middle mouse, you will get whatever was in the primary keyboard (the last thing you copied with the mouse).

You can chose which behaviour you want in Parcellite's preferences.

How? I don't see any option to do so in the preferences.

Re: Problem with coping text. Clipboard emptied when app closes.

Doesn't it say "Clipboards - Use Copy - Use Primary Selection"?

In terminal, what does apt-cache policy parcellite say?

Re: Problem with coping text. Clipboard emptied when app closes.

Primary selection is for something else, see: https://dodoincfedora.wordpress.com/201 … llite-tip/

Do you have this problem too? Just open gedit, type something and copy with Control-C. Close gedit and now try to paste somewhere else.

$ apt-cache policy parcellite
parcellite:
  Installed: 0.9.2-1
  Candidate: 0.9.2-1
  Version table:
 *** 0.9.2-1 0
        100 http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ squeeze/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Re: Problem with coping text. Clipboard emptied when app closes.

Thank you for your answer.

No, I don't have the problem but we had two related problems on the forums some time ago.  One was that in Thunar one has to right-click + choose "copy" twice to get the desired effect, the other one being a bug which was ironed out by downgrading to the version you are using. That's why I asked if the boxes are ticked.

Can't help you with that matter, I use sid and have version 1.0.2-rc5 or so.

You can use xfce4-clipman (I think that's the name, though it has some xfce4 dependencies) or clipit which doesn't pull additional dependencies:

apt-cache depends clipit
clipit
  Depends: libc6
  Depends: libglib2.0-0
  Depends: libgtk2.0-0
  Depends: libx11-6
  Recommends: xdotool

Edit: found the links to the issues we had before for you:
http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … re-solved/
http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … d-copying/

And another one to understand that there are two clipboards:

Re: Problem with coping text. Clipboard emptied when app closes.

Mike, I think losing the clipboard when you close an app is standard behaviour on Linux. Annoying, but one way round it is to use a clipboard manager like parcellite or xfce's clipman. I'm using clipman in my tint2 system tray (you don't need to be using xfce) and I've just checked - the clipboard contents of a Ctrl+C copy from leafpad are still available after closing the app. (Leave "Sync selections" unchecked in clipman's options.)

@johnraff :  Thank you very much! xfce's clipman solves the issue! I'm so happy smile this issue was driving me mad lol

Re: Problem with coping text. Clipboard emptied when app closes.

If I remeber well, I was using Parcellite just because it the default clipboard manager. Wouldn't it be better to have Xfce clipman as default in Crunchbang?

Re: Problem with coping text. Clipboard emptied when app closes.

Sorry, bacon-san I didn't notice your mention of xfce4-clipman. vYWQ0bQ However, the dependencies aren't all that disastrous:

Depends: libc6 (>= 2.3.6-6~), libexo-0.3-0 (>= 0.3.100), libglade2-0 (>= 1:2.6.1), libglib2.0-0 (>= 2.18.0), libgtk2.0-0 (>= 2.12.0), libunique-1.0-0 (>= 1.0.0), libx11-6, libxfce4util4 (>= 4.6.0), libxfcegui4-4 (>= 4.6.0), libxfconf-0-2

libexo would come with Thunar anyway, so it's mainly libxfce4util4, libxfcegui4-4 and libxfconf-0-2 - total of 1.7MB or so. Still, I suppose that could be enough to prevent it being a default Crunchbang app, unless some other bits of the system were going to use the same libraries.
