Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

The 1.3gb one was v1.0 the one based on crunchbang because I added some stuff on it. I haven't uploaded the v2 of Alien Section OS yet which is about 800 something megabytes I'm thinking of trimming it down to about 500mb or so. smile

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

This sounds reasonable. Get rid of the office package and thunderbird if you come from the Unity-based Ubuntu.

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

Release Notes: Release Notes for siduction 2012.1 Desperado

We are pleased to present our first release of siduction in 2012. siduction is released ~4 times per year and is based on the Debian Unstable repository.

Thank you for thoroughly testing our release candidate and posting bugs. We hope, we squashed them all.

siduction 2012.1 'Desperado' is shipped with 3 Desktop-Environments: KDE SC 4.8.3, XFCE 4.8 and LXDE, all in 32- and 64-bit variants. LXDE still fits a CD, KDE SC and XFCE fail to do so. Moving them to a USB-device with dd or cat to install from seems appropriate if your hardware supports booting from USB. (please refer to our manual)

The released images are a snapshot of Debian Unstable, that also goes by the name of sid, from 2012-05-21. They are enhanced with some useful packages and scripts, our own installer and a custom patched version of the linux-kernel 3.4-0, accompanied by XServer 1.12.1.902-1.

We ship KDE SC in version 4.8.3. Please mind that only a base-set of KDE SC 4.8.3 packages is yet packaged and uploaded.

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

^ What would this netinstall include by default? Does a Debian netinstall + siduction sources not suit you? (Seriously and sincerely asking)

I have the feeling that at siduction this could be possible. I think it was Devil who once stated that they'd even support Gnome if (quote) "somebody would offer to maintain it".

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

I guess the bare minimum would include enough to boot and connect to the internet..
Everything else could be downloaded "at will" (even the installer).
I think when I first installed Debian it was 8 cd's... iso's downloaded from the web.  The 6th one was bad.

I then downloaded the network install which fit on one 3.5 inch floppy.  The install went without a hitch, downloading and installing applications based on the questions I answered (like DE, Desktop vs Server, etc)

That's called the business card iso. So you go into expert mode, install Sid, add siduction repos and presto.

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

^ Maybe you know this already, so sorry in advance smile ^ You can do exactly like this with Debian's business card images (around 50MB): http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/6.0 … sscard.iso (for 64bit, this one). You install, then change the sources.list and apt-preference entry. The real 3.5" floppy disk images do not exist as far as I know, but the netboot with PXE is still supported: http://wiki.debian.org/PXEBootInstall?a … NetbootPXE

If you do the netinstall/business card install, you will be dropped into tty and have to set up everything manually. I guess siduction's netinstall would look quite the same at this point (except for the change in runlevels, though I don't think this makes a "real" difference for everyday use)

Edit: this is of course  @hinto and not @el_koraco who pushed himself between big_smile

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

^nice...
and I suppose I could add the #! distros, too.  It just been so long since I've had to do an install, since I roll.
Also, we have much fatter pipes to download dvd iso than we did 10 years ago.

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

Of course you can! Guess what for example vastone, ivanovnegro (IIRC), sunfizz, myself etc. have installed and still use big_smile Netinstalling is an unforgettable experience. Do it in a vbox first for a try, but honestly, it's easy.

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

Can you reliably install Gnome in SID?  I thought it was periodically broken.... hence the absence of a gnome version.

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

^ I'm having a try. Gnome's website says that it is supported,in Debian, and I think the breakages stem from the version mismatches. I'm loading the 'slimmed' version now with shell/panel/fallback and let you know in ... 5 minutes smile

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

I really like LXDE, if LXPanel was better behaved on a dual head.

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

So back again on Gnome. As expected, there are some things missing like the system settings screen and then panel integration. But it logged in smoothly. So far so good. Edit: dmaned, this is much snappier than in Buntu...

LXDE is a nice collection of tools, though I don't see any advantage to an openbox + panel_of_your_choice install. Especially the lxpanel is an ugliness, IMO.

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

^Right... I replaced LXPanel with tint2 (what a pain).   I decided to use XFCE. (call me lazy, I like DEs).
So now my thinking is a network install of #! with siduction sources (or testing), adding Cinnamon from LMDE and see if I can get the monster to come alive wink  I need to replace LM 10 since it's reached EOL.

Give my Creation Life

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

^ Good luck and let us know how it goes.

But why not staying with XFCE? I love it for being absolutely reliable and using just as many resources as openbox + tint2.

Re: Distro-hoppers Anonymous

ah... this is for the home computer... the fam is more familiar with gnome 2 (or XP/Win7 running as a vm guest).
at work, #! + siduction + XFCE
