New Thunar problem?

Hi all,
I've dist-upgraded the new Waldorf release to sid and I must say it's now a lot easier. I had been having more and more problems doing this from a Statler install. This is the first time in a long time I've not had to hold any of my favourite packages. There is an occasional problem with Thunar though but not the usual one with delayed or double opening (I've removed gvfs-backends). Occasionally it just closes itself for no apparent reason. For instance it occasionally does this when I right-click a folder to create an archive. As I say it doesn't happen very often.

Re: New Thunar problem?

I have witnessed this too, a few times. It would be good to try and debug the issue, but I am struggling as it seems impossible to replicate. Also, when it does happen, I cannot find any useful logs/ouput. hmm

Re: New Thunar problem?

I've found that the problem persists after installing the version in Debian Experimental (just Thunar, I didn't did a full dist-upgrade). So I think maybe this is not a problem with Thunar itself since that was quite a big version change, 1.2 to 1.4.

Re: New Thunar problem?

I have spent the last 30 minutes trying to replicate this without success

Do you have any other examples of when it will fail?

Re: New Thunar problem?

I'm experiencing it with 1.2 under Waldorf/Wheezy, but it is very sporadic -- maybe once a day, if that.

Stating the obvious; Why not launch Thunar from a terminal and check for any error messages?

Re: New Thunar problem?

I use 1.2.3 under Sid, very rarely it closes itself but it never bothered me, as I said very rarely that you even do not realize it. So, some bug exists.

An entry from the Debian BTS but old:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=625691 and seems not solved.

Re: New Thunar problem?

Maybe an old thunar plugin hanging around ? ... Take w grain of salt though. Also using the 1.2.3 version of thunar ... no probs ( knock wood). Had something similar happen w the squeeze version of thunar. Kept crashing and not a lil bit ( all the time, out of the blue). Solved it here ... uninstalled thunar, think even tried purge and upgrading to 1.2.3. Only plugins installed for it atm are the thunar-archive-plugin and thunar-volman from testing too.

Vll ! smile

PS, more pointless babbling, probably wrong, shrugs. Could consider stepping back to 1.2.3 version ? Is there anything that makes 1.4 vastly better than 1.2.3 ? Curious there ...

Some common cbiz abbreviations. This will save me time and yet @ same time tell folks what the babble is supposed to mean.

The problem happens with 1.2.3 (wheezy or sid), I only upgraded to Thunar 1.4 in experimental to see if the problem persisted, which it did.

Re: New Thunar problem?

Ahhhh ... probably should've read more closely. Other than saying that, obviously can't help resolve it. Lucky if can keep my own gnu/nix OS's unborked. tongue Hopefully a solution pops up or you figure it out and post the solution for everybodies benefit.

Re: New Thunar problem?

In the past there was Thunar's Copy problem (you had to right-click -> Copy twice) because of Parcellite (?)

Maybe this time it is something similar.

Re: New Thunar problem?

I use SpaceFM without any problems mainly for it's tabbed file browsing. The custom actions I used to use in Thunar (open as root / open terminal here / create archive / uncompress) are built in. For Trash & Network Mounts there are Plugins .

Re: New Thunar problem?

^ Question about SpaceFM: the website says

NOTE: SpaceFM requires libgtk >= 2.24. Debian Squeeze and Ubuntu 10.04 users also may not be able to install SpaceFM due to repositories missing package libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0

How much of this is true? Edit: In Wheezy, of course big_smile

Re: New Thunar problem?

I run SpaceFM on Wheezy & currently have installed:

libgtk2.0-0 -----------------> 2.24.10-1
libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 ------> 2.26.1-1

libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 breaks libgtk2.0-0 (<2.21.3) & Squeeze is currently at version 2.20.1-2

Re: New Thunar problem?

Thanks smile It's just quite interesting that I have not experienced any crashes with Thunar yet. If somebody could give me an instruction how to crash it, I would be happy to test it big_smile

Re: New Thunar problem?

No crashes of any kind here on Stable with Thunar 1.0.2

The only problem I've ever had iirc is that occasionally you have to exit and return to a directory to see an added or removed file properly displayed.

@tradetaxfree +1000 for SpaceFm, if I were building a distro, it would be my choice

Agree with Bacon and Ivan, if I could get Thunar to crash I could help more...

Thanks for the Plugins link, it had been a while since I had visited there and was quite surprised at the amount of Plugins
