Interesting. I started seeing this exact same thing this morning, on Waldorf with Compton. I noticed you posted in the 'Stable' forum, can you give an indicator as to what you are running on your system? Thanks.

I had this same issue with Statler. No clue what caused it but for me a reboot fixed the problem and it hasnt happened since

I got this frequently when I start up skype. I just restart compositing (xcompmgr) and it goes back to normal. I am running the almighty stable statler.
I love #! more than my own kids. I told them and they sympathized.

Sorry, I put this in the wrong forum. I am running Waldorf with 'sid' repos.
off topic: Thanks for making this great OS. Proves what one man can do against multi million dollar corporations!

I haven't seen it since either. But I run xfce now anyway.

Happened to me yesterday (Waldorf Openbox) when starting gparted. Like the OP posted, the left upper corner (a window of around quarter of the screen). Dis-/Enabled compton and it was okay again.

Okay, so it this is definitely not a one-off. I have now experienced it on 2 different systems. It would be good to try and debug this.
Note: I'll move this topic to the Waldorf devel forum and modify the title.

Have also experienced this once in Waldorf, same as others. Were shutting down the computer when it happened, so did not investigate, and have not seen any of it after that.
#!, all else is but a shadow!
May the Kernel be with you!

this isn't a waldorf issue - it's a compositing issue. I get it on a wheezied statler pc after doing doing a dist upgrade a week or two back so i'm still running xcompmgr.
I get it every second time i run machinebacons tv streaming script.
does not happen on my siduction pc (sid but not updated for quite some time)
edit: siduction pc is xfce with xfce compositing

The shadows happened to me as well, running Waldorf/Openbox. Began searching to see if anyone else had the issue. All I found at first was the "crazy shadows" post, not the same issue.
Happened to me when opening text files with Geany. Installed TEA, problem went away. Tried Geany again, problem returned. Made TEA the default for opening txt files, all ok.
Problem cropped up again when opening a pdf with Evince. Installed and made default MuPDF, problem went away.
I switched txt and pdf defaults back today. I may use any of these programs now and I can no longer recreate the shadow.
I've done a couple sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade since the issue first cropped up.
Compositing/Compton issue resolved?
At least I now know a temp fix - thanks for the thread.

@missinglink, are you sure the "crazy shadows" thing is a different issue?
I'm using cairo-compmgr now ala Statler, but when I was using xcompmgr on #! 9.04 the same sort of thing happened sometimes. You could fix it then by restarting xcompmgr. It looks as if Compton (an xcompmgr fork) still hasn't got round whatever it was.

@johnraff,
The OP @Gouwi described that issue:
"In fact, when i run some 3d programs i wrote, some "Break lines" appear on the screen. I think this is due to the shadow effect under windows. Some others little problems appears randomly too.
So i would like to know how can i remove the shadow effect under all windows and notifications pop-up..."
The break lines symptom did not describe what I was experiencing. W/o a screenshot, I assumed it's something else. At least the symptoms sound different, whether the cause is the same or related.
My shading (exactly like the screenshots) has not recurred for the last ~couple days. I figured maybe @corenominal had spackled the hole. Apologies to the forum if that means something naughty in British English.

i have this strange effect when opening Chromium, but i can't screenshoot it as it dissapears when i press "print". it's also easy to just switch to another workspace and back again - then it's gone.
however i also had it when configuring the interface of audacious (audio-player), but forgot to save the screenshootie.
well, here we are with "the shadow" when configuring the volume (is that pulse then?):
We are a nice, friendly community here and I hope we stay that way.

I only get the ghost shadow when I run a video (avi) in VLC
Interesting. Thanks to you mentioning VLC, I can now replicate the bug with some consistency, on 2 different systems. Can anyone else confirm by following these steps?
Start VLC via Openbox menu
Close VLC
Open File Roller via Openbox menu 'Accessories -> Archive Manager'

I have now created a bug report on GitHub, hopefully we'll get this sorted. If anyone else would like to confirm the bug, please do so

Confirming that this happens with me too. I have Nvidia drivers installed with a 9800GT.
I also get this problem while maximizing Chromium.

This also occurs with no parameters in comptonrc.

It showed up for me after opening three Geany instances. Restarted compositor it disappeared. Haven't seen it since, unable to reproduce (yet).

20120525 - Popped up again after putting Charamel Addon into Icedove. No Geany running.
