An easy way to install up-to-date software?

So, quite simply is there an easy way to update some software to their latest versions?

For example i'd like to keep up-to-date with some applications like VLC and Pidgin but unlike Ubuntu, i can't add repository keys using the PPA etc commands.

Pinning is one solution... there is a great How To on it by hardran3 here ...

Moving to Sid is another option.

Re: An easy way to install up-to-date software?

I think that the easiest way to install that type of software is entering in the official website and look for a download link in .deb or sources, then yo can do a manual installation.

Also, some software have an special repository for Squeeze where you can download the latest version, for example bluefish
