I personally think that chromium has long been the default and should stay that way. Not because I think it's the best browser... ( I personally really enjoy using Opera) but because it's what I'm used to seeing in a fresh #! install... I think the new browsers pipe is a great idea with all choices available on single click.
I personally don't like firefox / iceweasel really... although if it works better than another browser for some function I use it! like some things work in iceweasel that don't in opera or in chromium. I use all of them one time or another! As I'm sure everyone else does... I mean they are competeing browsers.
Google Chrome isn't something I really care for at all... It kinda put me off when I saw it in the pipemenu... isn't chromium the same thing?
Overall I think chromium looks cleaner... and fits better with #! than any other browser... and like everyone else has said if you want something different go ahead and use it.
But this is all just my preference...
If you ask me... mr.corenominal I'd make an educated breakdown of each browser and figure out which one has the advantages over other browsers that you are looking for. There has to be a real reason for switching the default on the base install besides, "I just think I like it better..."
Almost like when ubuntu made the switch to unity because some guy was like... "I like it better man its less complicated... duh hu... " most stupid move ever in linux history if you ask me... so many people switch because of unity it's not even funny.
Not saying switching to iceweasel would be a stupid move. But you've gotten my point right?

Iceweasel/FF for me on all my machines, Linux or Windows. After blacking my wallpaper, I did as vicshrike did and noted the hands-off default browser swap:
Iceweasel. The first thing I did after installing Waldorf, were to install Iceweasel. And jolly joo, to my big pleasant surprise it became the default browser without me doing anything.
Thanks boss.
I've never stayed with Chrome or Chromium for long. Occasionally use Opera, but I always come back to FF/Iceweasel. I've Synced since it was Mozilla Weave. And I like my add-ons just so.
Waldorf remains my best #! experience ever. Need to make a separate post re hardware tweaks I've done...
Thanks, Philip

I am using iceweasel too as my only web browser. The reasons I prefer it to chromium are the same as most of you have already posted here. It is also important to me that it looks the way I want, something I never achieved with chromium.
I love #! more than my own kids. I told them and they sympathized.

How do we get around without navigation bar?
PS: Just Alt+D-ing your way around the interwebs?

+1 for iceweasel

I like Iceweasel/FF and have been on the firefox bandwagon since phoenix v0.3 but now after using chrome I find myself having to make a deliberate effort to use FF and any time your doing that it's obvious your preferences lie elsewhere.
So chrome/chromium +1 for me.
In saying that it doesn't sit right with me seeing google chrome installed in Crunchbang. This is linux not windows and Crunchbang not Ubuntu and as such chromium seems the better choice and a better fit.

I tend to use Chrome wherever I can as I use it to sync everything across all my devices, including my android phone.

Yes, Alt+D or hovering the mouse over the tab bar to reveal the navigation bar (via the extension Lesschrome from Mozilla labs).

Iceweasel/FF.
Mainly because I use Zotero for my studies and a small library project. I also like the extensions I'm using, but I can't really say much about equivalents being available with chrome...

I personally prefer luakit, but I'd choose iceweasel aurora over chromium any day.
I avoid the lesser-known browsers purely for security reasons. I'm making the assumption that exploits are found and fixed in the mainstream browsers more rapidly. Having said that, these browsers are probably also targetted preferentially. Is it fair to say that the lesser-known browsers are at a greater risk?

^ My reading of the thread was that there were more favourable comments about Iceweasel. I think corenominal indicated that he would probably include it in the new Waldorf images.
The "other browser" is just an apt-get away.

My personal preference for general browsing is firefox/iceweasel. It is the first thing I add after installing a distro if it's not there by default. However my attachment to it is based more on emotion than logic. Regardless of firefox's short comings I like Mozilla and what they stand for and so support them where I can.
On the other hand I do think that Chromium sort of fits in better with #! 's minimalistic design.

^ & ^^^ Yeah, I haven't been counting either, but it seems to me the Weasel has enough votes to beat a Senate filibuster.

I can understand the cynicism, but truly, I was not expecting a conclusive answer. I was/am merely attempting to get a better understanding of why people prefer one over the other. Personally, I am really pleased with the responses and could not of asked for more. I think el_koraco kicked-off brilliantly with:
1. Webkit font rendering with Freetype - fail
2. V8 being too fast for its own good and choking on simple websites -fail
3. Fugly Chrome interface with no customization options - fail
4. Chrome not being designed for Linux in the first place (see 1, 2, 3 and many more) - fail
And, unless I am mistaken(?), there does seem to be a clear preference for Iceweasel. How would I have known this, if I had not asked? As I mentioned in the original post,
I know this is one of those topics that gets discussed over 'n' over
but sometimes, I think it is good to go over old ground to get a fresh perspective. I am sorry if anyone finds this at all offensive.

I use Iceweasel mostly for all of the above reasons. However, my main reason is the addons that I use.
1) NoScript - I don't run without it
2) FlashGot - Like DownThemAll it is very usefull
3) Adblock+ with popup block - Love it.
