Finally!

Now that I have waited so long to come to this awesome distro, and having made a couple of posts elsewhere in this forum, I shall introduce myself (if you all don't mind). I've been using linux exclusively for a couple-three years now (Ubuntu and Debian), and more or less sporadically for maybe ten (I remember vividly not being able to make heads or tails of redhat long ago), I feel at home, despite some difficulties. I have celebrated the completion of my Welding program by installing #! last weekend, and I don't think I'm going to be looking back anytime soon. I was introduced to OpenBox (or was it BlackBox?) long ago by a friend, back when I was running some sort of hacked version of WindowsXP, and have been wanting to run it again under Linux. I guess my mistake was trying to do it with Ubuntu. Anyway, it's beautiful.

I'm running Waldorf, so my wireless dongle works.

I was born in the old USSR, grew up in Israel, and currently live in the U.S. It appears that I have an addiction to screwed up countries...

Many thanks to corenominal,
Peace,
Marc.

Was this a computer application or actual metal fabrication?  If so, what kind of fabricating are you doing?  (I've been watching a little American Chopper and am considering an Atomic Zombie-style bicycle build...no experience welding though.)

Re: Finally!

pvsage: actual fabrication. I get a sooty face at the end of the day big_smile We did a little bit of CNC, and I got to play with the robot, although we didn't have a virtual environment thing to program it. So mainly manual welding with TIG and wirefeed. I have to tell you, welding might not be higher math (which is what i wanted to do until I found out how much it costs to go to school here), but having a 20,000degF (10,000degC) plasma arc under your hands is pretty cool. Since I just got out of the program, I'm not doing any actual fabrication yet... tongue Although I'm thinking about headin' out west to the North Dakotan tar sands for a little while to see if I can make my fortune there big_smile
ivanovnegro, machineboom: You know, every once in a while I wonder if there are any countries that are not screwed up. Oh, well... Thank you all for the welcome smile

Ya wanna see some weird sh!t, check out atomiczombie.com - it's amazing what some people can come up with starting from a basic bicycle frame and a little EMT. cool

Re: Finally!

^Yeah, bike frames are fun, but I wouldn't try to build one without at least an alignment table. Although it seems that the AtomicZombie.com people do without... Maybe they're not as obsessive-compulsive as I am.

Pardon me, but what does EMT mean in this context?

Welcome to #! smile

Countries that are NOT screwed-up... Canada? No, wait. Moose - the really funny looking deer. Nope. Everywhere's screwed.

Re: Finally!

Welcome, Marc -- Enjoy your stay in #! land (though I'm with mereljim -- I'm not sure there's any country that isn't screwed up to some degree; some moreso than others, clearly, but still)

Re: Finally!

Howdy!  Welcome, finally ;-)

You're living in my home country, and I'm not!  What's up with that?

Yeah, they're all messed up in some way.  The longer you stick around in a place the more screwed up you realize it is.  Oh well, Focus on the good stuff :-)

Re: Finally!

The funny part is that the good stuff seems to be pretty much the same everywhere, doesn't it? Although I must say that I prefer kebabs to burgers...
