Okidoki, here goes...

I'm running a dualboot with #! 9.04.01 64bit (main OS) and Windows 7 something-or-other (games and photography OS)

AMD Phenom II X3 720 @ 3000 mhz
4096 RAM @ 1066 mhz
320 + 500 + 1000 Gb HDD
22" Samsung LCD 1680x1050 stuck-to-wall
Nvidia Geforce 9800 GTX+ graphics
mouse and keyboard on-a-wire (I hate changing batteries)

and to top it off:
QNAP TS-209II nas (running debian-based linux) for my photobackup and music via Squeezbox

I loves ma 'puter....and I loves #! more and more every day...sob...I does...

Plans have changed since my last post (prev page) smile

Most of the components for the desktop have stayed the same, but its upgraded to an i7-920 with a Gigabyte X58 motherboard and 6GB of RAM. Order has been placed, now I just have to wait for the bits to get here big_smile

Planning on trying a quad boot setup with XP (for games and office), #! (for most use), openSUSE (for more 64-bit usage and experimentation) and another linux distro, probably Mint (for testing apps). The 3rd and 4th may be dropped if 64-bit #! works well on the machine.

I have one more now.

This is my home box, which until a couple of weeks ago was running Kubuntu 8.04, which I changed the hard way to Xubuntu 8.04, then upgraded to 9.04. But I really wanted Openbox on it because I really liked it on my ancient laptop (which runs #!). I thought I'd read that someone installed #! using the 8.10 installer in 9.04. I tried it and then the machine wasn't booting. sad So I swapped the hard drive out (this is also the house samba server that has all of the pics and mp3s on it) and installed #! last night. I will copy all of the data tonight and get it back to 100%.

Strange indeed. Maybe it was just that I broke it an hour before driving to the airport for a week away and didn't have time to adequately troubleshoot the thing. But it would get up to the last few init scripts (or even up to gdm) and just freeze. Since it had been upgraded and not fresh-installed all the way back to Kubuntu Edgy, I just decided that it was time for a new install anyway.

An Acer One with 512MB RAM and 8GB SSD that I picked up ridiculously cheap new because it isn't the current model (which has a might 16GB.) I was provoked to replace Linpus when I found that the Man pages weren't complete - I could have lived with no Man pages as that would have been an intelligent space saving strategy, but incomplete ones - with no reader - just seemed sloppy...

Anyway, I 've got Firefox with 9 tabs open, emacs, Abiword, and GIMP - and I'm only using 56% of that 512MB RAM and the machine is fast and sharp. I'm impressed!

I have been using ubuntu since 5.04. It is a pretty old PC (Late 2003), which i have upgraded a little. I installed the #! minimal. Heck, even KDE4 runs seamless, so why won't openbox. In fact every stable linux distro i have tried runs perfectly on it, its the damn windows for which i had to get the drivers from compaq site.

Just installed #! 8.04.1 from LiveCD on my
Compaq Presario 1672 350MHZ AMD K6-2 with 192Meg RAM and a Fujitsu 60 Gig IDE Drive.

Installed on a 12 Gig Partition that did contain TinyME Acorn.....but it was really slow, and development
was basically halted due to internal problems ........!

The only problem I had was trying to get my Wifi working because I don't have a Wired LAN
connection, and wvdial wasn't included on the LiveCD for Dialup. I had to find the deb packages,
download them, then find that I needed some dependencies, for wvdial to work. After installing the
deb's everything went well. I just used wvdial to get the Broadcom Firmware that enabled
my Wifi. Then I used the Wifi to mark all updates and downloaded all 260.....

So far, everything is looking fine.....in fact I am in the middle of an upgrade now.
Hope it all goes well.

#! beat out .... DSL 4.xx, TinyCore 1.43 & 2.xx, MiniME Droplet 0, MiniME Droplet 1, TinyME Acorn, and Slitaz

I have been working with a 64 bit Ubuntu system on my laptop since januari 2007. When it became 8.10, my system was getting in to trouble. Fan came on from system start and would not silent, making my ears beep.

When Ubuntu 9.04 came out, I decided to back up all my data and begin with a fresh 9.04 64 bit OS. Trouble began shortly after that. After being logged in for 10 minutes and doing some work my system would die unexpectedly telling me that my filesystem was "read only" after rebooting it would tell me to run fsck manually which completely destroyed my /home directory.

Been in and out of reinstalls for 3 weeks. Even tried Gentoo in between, but Gentoo had issues with my wlan.

At a certain point I got so fed up. An article in the dutch linux magazine pointed me to crunchbang. At first I tought it would not do because it was only available as 32 bit system. But then I decided that it would be better to have a working 32bit environment then a constantly crashing 64bit.

I have crunchbang 8.10 set up for a week now. It is stable, consuming no more then 180Mb RAM when idle. And it is lightning fast!

Stuff I did to customize crunchbang:

removed osmo, xpad, pcmanf, claws mail and abiword
installed OpenOffice 3.0, nautilus, evolution, google earth, alsa 1.0.20, pgAdminIII and netbeans

Customized the menu to replace the removed applications and integrate nautilus.

There is still one little hurdle to take, I need quantumGIS, my GIS application. But it gives a segmentation fault.

I finally got around to installing crunchbang on eeepc 701. I've been running freebsd and eeeubuntu before but got sick of them all. I love the clean and light functionality of crunchbang, this is thus far the best os for this diminutive laptop.

I'm writing this using the text only elinks browser that came with the os. This is surprisingly usable...
