Probably someone's asked this before.. but why say "CrunchBang Linux is not recommended for anyone needing a stable system ... breakages.. etc etc". Maybe I'm tempting fate but it seems easy to install, configure, and it seems rock solid (at least with squeeze) - albeit for the few days I've had it. I am no techie, I struggle with lots of stuff, so I reckon if I can use CB just about anyone can.
I know I didn't try #! for a long while because of this statement (which was a pity). Might it not put others off, perhaps unnecessarily? Why not say something like.. In its most stable form #! is easy to use, superfast, & rock solid. But for those who prefer a more bleeding edge configuration it may indeed go crunch-bang..
I dunno, just a thought.

Because if you're not lying shamelessly about your software and making patently untrue claims, you're being unprofessional.
LEGO won't be ready for the average user until it comes pre-assembled, in a single unified look, and glued together so it doesn't come apart.

Yep ... covered, covered again. Though nothing wrong with posting a new opinion as a new user of this OS. Did the same thing, said about the same too. Though too lazy to trackdown the post. The disclaimer did put me off, have seen it mentioned by others and here again.
Think it's an attempt at tongue in cheek. Am 100% sure it's scaring people away from this kickbutt nix distro though. People don't take it as humorous when it comes to maybe messing up their PC's or losing important info or whatever. They all ( every distro ) pretty much says the same thing. They just do it in a more politically correct format.
ie: X linux is free software, offered under the GPL, it comes with no express or implied warranty ... blahblahblah, add more lawyerish sounding stuff ... blah-yada-yada-blah-blah.
Imo and experience #! is hard to break. Anything Debian stable isn't likely to get more stable from what I've seen. Have managed to break squeeze once or twice, well not really broke, more like borked or wanted a fresh install to set up differently. Breaking #! is certainly possible ... but ALOT harder than so many others w or w/o the PC legalese disclaimers, shrugs.
Vll ! N welcome to #! Jerry.

I've read some of the forum. It's not really in the "small print" though, it's way out in front - like it's a major feature of the distro, when in fact it's not, quite the opposite.
Any distro can screw-up, I would argue that #! is LESS likely to do so. I've had more trouble with Ubuntu based Linux Mint than I've had with debian (in my case Parsix).

Indeed that's what I'm saying, I think the way the disclaimer is put is an unnecessary scare but perhaps it has become an identifying feature of the distro, after all it is in the name.
Thanks for the welcome btw.

My suggestion would be to go through corenominal's posts and see his style of development and interaction with the community. In this context the disclaimer makes perfect sense. It just reflects who he is and how he operates as a person
I think it also reflects the community as a whole. I've never seen so many people prepared to break and experiment with their systems just for fun

^^ it is a scare indeed, but apparently there have been more than enough people willing to try it still after reading that disclaimer. myself included, and this was the first linux distro i ever tried, so it is certainly not something that is sure to scare off newcomers.
i suppose what you're saying is true then, 'it has become an identifying feature of the distro'.
seems to me people who read the disclaimer then still decide to install make a dedicated decision to go with this distro because it appeals to them very much, and are willing to repair anything that might break. i think that is quite a good way of looking at things.

yeha, imagine if a new sports car came with a similar warning... ***driving this car like shumacher may leave skidmarks on more than just tarmac, you might even have fun...****
however, if you drive it responsably it will get you from A to B no probs.
that's the way i feel...
Ps welcome. jerry525 you're ganna love it here.

Ah, the disclaimer topic - haven't had it this month yet.
Basically the disclaimer should be part of *every* Linux distro - or every aspect in life.
Welcome to Crunchville, jerry.

Heck, even Apple's EULA for OSX states something to the effect that it shouldn't be used for mission-critical applications, like running a nuclear power plant. (I wonder what software *is* used in such applications?

I imagine corenominal, being a one-man team, doesn't want to worry about crazy people coming after him personally for supposedly blowing up their netbook or whatever.

Now that I've thought about it. The disclaimer could very well be an ingenius ploy ! A devious means to keep the uber annoying, can't seem to find their own way to google.com'in, make ya wanna bash em with a stick nix newb's away. They see the scary disclaimer and immediately hop on the buntu bandwagon ! Tis brilliant !
Anyone else remember those early dys of OSS ... And the more mainstream gnu/nix distro forums. After awhile it gets to the point that if one more person asks how do I reinstall grub, ya either going to swallow your own tongue, reach through the PC and throttle the offender and find yaself screaming YOU GOOGLE YA FRIGGIN RETARDS, YOU GOOGLEEEEEEEEEEEE !
This way, they bypass #!, until they get feet wet, RTFM and figure out how to point their web browser to google.com. Thus we can all sleep easier, it's brilliant I tell ya !
Bein a dork, as usual.

ONLY ONE !!?!!?
Think I'm over it for the time being. When start bashing it's a combination of having been awake too long usually and the ever present caffeine overdosing. Well that and I obviously don't like canonical Inc, shrugs.
Besides every rose has the thorn right ? The people who made all this kickbutt opensource decided the terms and allowed commercializing it, if ya can ... fair game. Thusly all's fair in luv n linux anyway. I don't even resent the monetary interest, we all like opportunities to stack up some bucks, even kinda respect Redhat ... I mean they've got gnu/Linux running on nuclear subs and missile defense networks n so forth.
So at least they must be dang good, it's when somebody does it badly, for whatever reason sticks in me crawl. But it's a new day ... soon there will be BBQ. All is right w da world fellow nixers. And hope things are good wherever ya'll are too.
Vll ! And UDOD ! ( use Debian ... or die !)

Interaction? What interaction?!! He gone all Jean Reno and hardly says anything these days.
who he is and how he operates as a person
Meaning, if you complain of breakage, he'll sneak into yer home and pop a bullet in yer forehead, in true Jean Reno fashion. Then he'll go back and tend to his plants or something. Now you know why there are almost no reports of Crunchbang breaking.

gutterslob, you know as well as i do that corenominal's silence is usually an indication that something new is brewing for us. he's just proven that with the Waldorf-testing release. and when he does release it, he's suddenly active again! sure, i'd like to see him more often, but mainly because he's a nice guy.
i think the threat of surrender at gunpoint is something inherent in this community. i still feel the shadow of Black Ivan hovering over me everyday
