Remap keys

Before you send me over to the Debian forums: I like it here, and would prefer to post here if it's ok with you.

To the point then; I installed Debian Squeeze in VirtualBox on a recent (21,5" 2011) iMac. I was pleasantly surprised to see that pretty much everything worked OOTB - expect wireless, but let's not bother with that now.

My main issue is that the <> key prints §½ and vice versa. I would like to change that. I have read up on xbindkeys, xmodmap and whatnot. I have tried myself, but can't get it to work.

What I can do is set an ”action” to a specific key, but what I want to do is to make the key print what is written on the damn thing (Apple keyboard... sigh).

Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

Anyway, I'm not going to tell you to go to the Debian forums, but how about their Wiki? The main content seems to be:

Change Keyboard Layout

A keyboard layout can be changed on command line:

$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration

This will prompt you for the model of keyboard (what the keyboard *is*), and then for the keyboard layout (what the keys should *do*). Use this tool to change your keyboard map e.g from qwerty to qwertz, or for non-English layouts.

Pardon my late reply. Thanks for the info. The keyboard layout is correct, but if I could change the keys around a bit it would be great. I will look into what you suggested above and get back with the results as soon as I have the time.

Probably! I tried to reconfigure, still a no-go. The erroneus keys are still the same. This is no biggie. I'll learn to live with it.
