Re: Hello form a distro-hopper

Well I still have a week or so to make my mind up, but I'm leaning towards Arch. I want to configue my whole system from (almost) nothing, but I'll likely be using #! as a sort of "target" to aim for. I'm aware of the Archbang distro, but I think the route of configuring the system will help me learn a lot more about it (and it's fun too wink )

Don't worry though, I'll still be hanging around here becasue you seem like a great bunch. I have a number of scripts which I wrote to make my life easier, which I'll post on these forums. Let it not be said that I show no hospitality to those who offer free coffee wink

Re: Hello form a distro-hopper

Even if you go with Arch, there's nothing that says you can't hang out in the forums...

If you want a complete Configure / Learning experience Why use the half measure of Arch..
Join the Real Serious Geeks and go LFS... Linux from Scratch Distro..

Hey - unless you like pain, there's no need for *that*! Might as well be using Windows ME...

Re: Hello form a distro-hopper

My experience with LFS was less learning than following directions... like a cookbook. I didn't learn how to cook.

Re: Hello form a distro-hopper

My experience with LFS was less learning than following directions... like a cookbook. I didn't learn how to cook.

I can see how that might happen..
However, for me every step in the Cookbook that I didn't see before or somehow knew.... I learned something, usually valuable.
Of course, nothing learned is of value if you immediately forget it.
I always at least strive for remembering where I got the answer. Then that is again something valuable learned.
Much of what I do with programming languages is like that.. I don't  remember verbatim the syntax I need but I will remember the Key Word and then know where to go to get the correct syntax.
.....But then that is just me..
just sayin......

Re: Hello form a distro-hopper

^ i'll be trying LFS too as soon as i get a 2nd hand PC or something. really interested in it, mainly to learn about all the different components that make up a typical Linux system.

Karl, have you made up your mind yet? i'll give you a free tip: stay with #! big_smile

Re: Hello form a distro-hopper

Personally, I think there's something to be learned from every distro-hop made, good or bad. But, in general, I think the users on this forum make things easier because while getting the job done, we have fun and don't take ourselves too seriously.

Re: Hello form a distro-hopper

I will be going with Arch, but I'll be hanging around the forums still wink

My reasons for going with arch over LFS are primarily to do with the AUR. I will probably fiddle with LFS when I find myself a second box and have more free time.
