[SOLVED] Best filesystem for cramped little partition?

I have a circa-2005 laptop with a puny half GB RAM and 60 GB hard drive (but an actual diskette drive!). It has Windows XP, which I occasionally find welcome when a Windows-accustomed assistant wants to borrow a computer. However, I have an additional use for the computer in mind, and so am planning to devote half its pokey little hard drive to some Linux distro, and #! (which I'm contentedly using on two other machines) looks good.

"ReduceDebian" gives me ideas for saving space. The computer does have a Super key, so no need for this workaround. But how about the filesystem? I'd normally use ext4, but is there a better choice for a small (but conventional) drive with limited free space?

I have an even older system - Acer Aspire 1711SMI - circa 2003 with 512 MB RAM and 80 GB disk.

i;m running #! on 9Gb with a 1Gb swap.
installed two more browsers skype a bunch of other stuff, if you keep mp3s photos etc (media) on the NTFS partition you can just mount it on #!, or the other way round....
PS I have a dell latitude c400 (circa 2001) a pathetic 30Gb HDD  and an equally lame half a Gig of ram. and a relaxed PIII 1.3Ghz lol
I haven't maxxed out the ram yet, even with a few browsers, geany, gimp, skype and media player. only by making a 2Gb png image file - could i get the swap to activate...

i'm happy running stuff, i;m sure you will be.

hell even XP can fit into 10Gb...
its only media that takes the space.

Not to one up you guys, but I have a Texas Instruments TravelMate LT286/45, circa 1989. It has a 286 chip at 12MHz, 20Mb HDD, 3.5" floppy, running Windows 2.1/286. Original retail price: $5995. I don't think they called them laptops back then, since the thing weighs like 35lbs. I've been tempted to try to put an older version of Minix on it, but it seems to be more of a project than I have time for nowadays.

To Microcord, I'd just go ext4. Any FS that's lauded for a speed or size benefit will be because it's a few percent better. Huge difference in data centers and running mission critical applications, but probably not noticeable on your box, unless your doing this as a challenge / learning experience, then I hope a better answer than mine comes along.

Thanks everyone; i saw this post and at first said wtf? -- I have two distros running on a 40G drive and could probably fit three -- half of a 60G drive is plenty, and no extra efforts should be required to to fit something on it -- ext4 will be fine...

"pokey little hard drive" --- many of us have less; #! thrives on minimal hardware...

Thank you, peoples, and particularly noman. Yes, a little reading even before I posted the question was enough to show me that my computer is modern, fast and capacious compared with some that others have successfully installed #! onto. It was essentially a question about the filesystem, and I now know that I'll go ahead with ext4.

(But maybe I'll do a bit more reading about XP first. Yesterday I managed to delete a huge number of files from it, but they only amounted to a couple of GB. Surely there's more in there that nobody will ever use.)

I didn't have any particular reason to doubt this, but I'd ignorantly guessed that different situations and different kinds of drives might have different bests. (These days hard drives tend to have hundreds of free gigabytes; mine certainly doesn't.)

normally for me it's in the application data folder in xp... googlecaches etc...
to strip xp down you can use something like xplite.

Thank you, wuxmedia. Actually I managed to scrub a couple more GB a few hours ago. And then:

  • Had a hunch that I could find a better alternative to the built-in defragger; read about this freebie; downloaded it, ran it

  • Booted off Clonezilla and copied an image of C:

  • Booted off Gparted, deleted D: and reduced the size of C: by 15GB

  • Booted into Windows, which noted an "inconsistency" in C: (that's a polite way to put it!) and checked it, then found "new hardware" (which I suppose is Windows-speak for "disappearance of D:") and wanted to reboot; but thereafter worked fine

  • Booted live off Crunchbang, which didn't ask about my keyboard but (most impressively) did make a wireless connection

  • Rebooted off the Crunchbang CD; installed Crunchbang

  • Rebooted, noticing that no Windows option appeared in Grub but guessed it could be resuscitated

  • Ran the Crunchbang install script; downloaded a number of packages, deleted a few

And here I am, happily typing away on this antique computer. Video playback (as judged via my regular, informal test, a viewing of Black Sea of Concrete) is horrible, which is a little disappointing but hardly a surprise. But everything else seems to be working fine. (And sure enough Windows appears as an option in Grub and it runs contentedly too.)

The next stage might be to buy a bigger hard drive. Here somebody replaces the drive in an identical computer with one of 320GB. Actually drives are so cheap, a 1TB drive has a certain comic allure; but even if the BIOS allowed it (and I guess it wouldn't), I don't know what I'd do with all the space. So for now, 27GB for CrunchBang.

Well, during much of the video you're only supposed to get about one image every two seconds or so, but I don't suppose that this part is what you're referring to!

If that's your eleven-year-old Dell, I'm not surprised.

This Fujitsu isn't so old or slow, and it does better than one frame every two seconds. (No, I'm not trying to boast!) But I'd hoped for a better result than what I get. It's distinctly worse in Iceweasel (running all by itself) under #! than in Firefox (also running all by itself) under XP on the same machine. (It's not pleasant in XP, but it's intolerable in #!.)
