Hi friends,
I have got a new toy, an old Lenovo T61 Thinkpad (4Gb Ram - 2,2 Ghz - Nvidia Card)
Which kernel sould I install, the 64-bit Stable + Backports?
I'll have problems with Nvidia card? How to solve it if?
Thanks

Hm, 4 Gb RAM seems to me 64bit. If you will have problems with your Nvidia card, not sure, try the LiveCD. I think it is easy to install the drivers for it if needed.

Hi Aleph,
Yes, try what Ivan says.
While booted in live system, run following commands and post output:
lspci -knn
lsusbx
bootinfoscript - emacs primer - I ♥ #!

Hey Aleph, what is the manufacture date of your T61? You do know that most of the nVIDIA chips in the T61 (and most other laptops of the era) are defective, right?

Thanks friends,
I'll try the Live CD and post the output (maybe this afternoon or tomorrow, now I am very busy).

@Neil, the date is 2007, the nvidia card is Quadro NVS 140M. Is this ok? I hope...

Is my nvidia card ok?
And the output?

Hi Aleph,
Everything seems OK.
If you want the nvidia proprietary driver, select the one for 'Quadro NVS 140M'. It is available from the nvidia.com site.

They did not have the redesigned chips until machines manufactured on or after Aug. 2008. So that means you have one of the defective chips, unless the motherboard was replaced with one that has a redesigned chip. Don't worry about it too much, all the chips are defective and their layers can begin to seperate, but they are not certain to do so. Some of them have performed well all these years and are still going strong.
I have owned two machines with these graphics chips, and both of them have failed. I still have one of them, a T61, but I've swapped the motherboard with one that has an Intel GPU on it instead.

I just bought an older T61 as well and the 64 bit BPO kernel works great. I installed the nvidia drivers by using the module assistant and everything is working like a champ. You can find the module assistant instructions here: http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/topic … tallation/
Just make sure you are completely up to date before you install the nvidia drivers and you should be good to go!

Hi friends,
Thanks!
I installed CB and everything is working!

I did rabbitofdeath, and work fine!
So that means you have one of the defective chips
Neil, I have fear... Which is the problem? How can I know if is not working well? At the moment everything seems to work well.

Glad it worked out for you!

That sounds a bit like unwarranted fear - the machine is 5 years old - if it hasn't died by now, it will probably be ok or it already had work done. Just enjoy it!
