Following on from falldown's GIMP tutorial on a glass text effect, I've used the method to produce some effects for a GIMP splash screen.
If you d/l the image, resize it to whatever you want, and put it in /user/.gimp-2.x/splashes (create the directory if it doesn't exist). GIMP will pick a file at random to display at startup

Really cool desaturation effect at the bottom.
The effect was got by duplicating the layer, desaturating, then pastel sketch filter. Some erasing with a graphite pencil brush, then a pattern bg.
I never saw this damo, my bad...
Excellent work and it is now added to Quick References under Gimp/Design/Art
