Nvidia vs ATI - linux drivers & support

i've always been an Nvidia guy. never even tried ATI once.
i've never had problems with lack of linux support for Nvidia cards.
there always seemed to be a solution.

is ATI graphics hardware still a problem under linux these days (i read it once was) ?
just asking b/c some of those nice new samsung notebooks now have ATI cards...

As you say "there always seemed to be a solution", if you use stable u can use fglrx and if u use sid radeon is better .

I use stable + backports on my AMD/ATi box; the generic driver works great with it.  (The stable kernel also works with it, but it doesn't support the HDMI output on my onboard Radeon graphics set.)  No problems with GPU overheating, and the gettys look wizard.  GLXgears is locked to the monitor refresh rate, but why should I want it to exceed this?  (EDIT:  Seriously, why would I want GL processing 2000+ fps when the monitor is only showing 60fps? )

I'm a big fan of the way nvidia twinview and cairo-compmgr work together. I have some performance issues when using xinerama. It's been a long time since I've even tried using an AMD card though, so I don't have a comparison from personal experience.

@pvsage: correct, no need to melt down the GPU when display limit is 60 FPS. but AFAIR, glxgears's output isn't exactly the FPS.

Do AMD drivers even allow compositions when using multiple displays? I was under the impression that xinerama didn't play well with compositioning.

Nvidia +1 for Linux. But, if you have new Nvidia chipsets and Optimus or etc it's not so good. Still there's a workaround for these, I believe you can't get efficiency. And ATI, I got 1950gt 4 years ago, sucked with Wine. It's similar to Geforce5200 with Wine. But if you use it with native opengl games like sauerbraten amazing. The key point for gaming, it's Nvidia.
