All the Linux community wants is to create a really good, fully-featured, free operating system. If that results in Linux becoming a hugely popular OS, then that's great. If that results in Linux having the most intuitive, user-friendly interface ever created, then that's great. If that results in Linux becoming the basis of a multi-billion dollar industry, then that's great.
It's great, but it's not the point. The point is to make Linux the best OS that the community is capable of making. Not for other people: For itself. The oh-so-common threats of "Linux will never take over the desktop unless it does such-and-such" are simply irrelevant: The Linux community isn't trying to take over the desktop. They really don't care if it gets good enough to make it onto your desktop, so long as it stays good enough to remain on theirs. The highly-vocal MS-haters, pro-Linux zealots, and money-making FOSS purveyors might be loud, but they're still minorities.

I agree with everyone above -- "yawn," especially -- and as soon as I stop rolling my eyes, I can say that this always comes up every three or four months or so. In fact, numbers released back in January show that for the six months preceding the report, Linux’s desktop market share had grown from 0.97 percent to 1.41 percent. Not outstanding numbers, to be certain, but not exactly the desktop "dying" either.
As a blogger, I've been writing about how wrong these "predictions" are for quite some time (shameless self-promotion to follow):

If Linux takes over the general consumer's desktop, the general consumer will take over linux, and it will start to suck as bad as other OS.

For anyone not believing this, just download yourself a copy of Linpus Linux. It's what Acer puts on their non Windows machines.

Linpus . . . ugh (runs screaming from the building).

damn those screenshots look scary. it's like someone who'd seriously consider using Comic Sans on his PC Help flyers made the design for a bastardized Linux.

This.
And I'm SUPER GLAD we're a small, tight knit community. I thought it was a little larger, and am actually stoked it's smaller. Hopefully it gets better, AND smaller at the same time. Hell, I heard Linux was growing, but I don't personally ever meet anyone who runs linux IRL. The couple people that even generally know what Linux is say they've used Ubuntu! That's the extent of that.
Linpus looks like totally bloated garbage. (Wonder why it looks so much like Win7?) Speaking of, I'm working with some installs on Win7 at work right now and I literally want to rip my face off.

Probably most of the people in my classes have ran linux at home for at least a short while. One guy is a Windows Server admin that runs gentoo on his home desktop. I just formatted his laptop that had F15 and put #! on it the other day for a lab we did that involved DDoSing the other day, it was awesome.

i also hope linux stays the way it is. if it became mainstream, we'd really have a problem.

No there is no hope for us, we are eternally doomed to crawl here in the b/w abyss of the #! purgatory inferno...and all thanks to one man...
#!, all else is but a shadow!
