Hello everyone. I learned a bit about Linux from a college course and decided to check it out to see what it was all about. I spent a couple months messing with different live media discs to see which distros I liked. I have accidentally and intentionally completely wiped my hard drive clean at least a couple times. I have finally decided on which distros I am going to keep permanantly installed on my HP pavilion dm4. I've decided to stick with Mint12 and CrunchBang. Mint12 is pretty user friendly and does all the stuff that other OS can do. I like crunchbang because it's super light and I really like openbox. I've played around with some configs on things like conky and tin2. One thing I noticed about #! is that a person could seriously spend the rest of thier life configuring and reconfiguring this system. it's addictive. I have to admit though, I have still been using mostly GUIs to do everthing on both distros. I'd really like to get to know the terminal and some basic commands. Anyone care to point me in a direction?

Welcome to #! Harlow, good choice of distros you`ve made. Hope that you will find your stay here with us both pleasant and rewarding. If/when in doubt, just ask, or if not, throw your self out in some off topic silliness. Have fun!
#!, all else is but a shadow!
May the Kernel be with you!

Welcome to #! Harlow...you can also hit tab twice while in terminal and it will give a long list of commands. Then you can check out the man pages for them

hi Harlow, welcome to the community! for terminal-resources, check out that link by safetycopy to a thread where somebody was looking for the same thing. also, the terminal uses the bash language for most of its stuff (by default, at least). so you might want to read up on bash. for doign that, check out the link in my signature.
if you have questions, just ask!

This is amazing. I've been exploring some of the resources you all presented. I feel like Neo when he was first strapped into the matrix and he was all like "give me more." The tuxfile stuff is extremely helpful. I feel myself becoming a Linux junkie. My wife asked me a conky was and as I eagerly began explaining to her, the curious look on her face quickly turned to regret. I have also learned that I have no real life friends who really give any amount of crap about operating systems, you so folks are my only outlet. I don't imagine it will be terribly long before I'm all like "i know kung fu."
P.S. I have yet to come accross a command for eating pasta. that must be a bit deeper

would adding a parameter of -c cut the noodles into smaller lengths to avoid having to twist the entire thing around a fork? I'm going to work on this. there's gotta be a way to turn the pasta into ravioli.
