I will elaborate on what I believe. I honestly believe I should be able to own a gun if I have a clean record and it is for sport and protection over my family. I believe if I have not commited crimes barring me from owning, there is no reason I should not own one. If someone were to try to rob me, I would draw my weapon in an instant, and shoot only to kill.
There would be far less crime if petty criminals trying to mug and stab someone over $20 were shot on the spot.

I have two small children and a wife. I live in a city filled with crimes of just pure stupidity. If ever someone threatens my family, I believe it is fully my right to at that time do what it takes to protect my family. People are vicious here. We have MS-13, Bloods, Vice Lords, Crips, etc. Northenos...if you've not heard of these gangs, I would suggest researching them.

Some Bloods initiate by simply going out and killing someone to get into the gang, or slashing someone, robbing, etc. It's ludicrous, and more beyond that, and to a very sad point...I don't trust other human beings. If someone would even try to take my life, I would not flinch to end theirs.

My 2 cents. I believe the same with drugs, anyone should be able to do basically whatever they choose to freely do if it doesn't harm others. If people want to do crack, heroin, meth, etc. I honestly don't have a problem with it. You're only going to hurt yourself, and if you try to hurt someone else or commit a crime, I believe you then should be punished equally.

People trying to police what others can do, and governments outlawing drugs just doesn't work. People will rebel. It's very simple to me, do what you want privately at home, don't negatively effect others with your actions and you're in the clear.

As far as hunting for sport, I agree with you all. Just for fun is not right, to feed you and family is A ok.

DOUBLE EDIT: I've never hunted once in my entire life. I'm a big meat eater, but I'm not hunter. I own guns just because I can, I love shooting, and they are bar none the best personal protection.

Without taking this thread horribly off-topic... I respect the "do it yourself" mentality in others, whether that is hunting deer, growing a garden, tinkering with cars, learning to play a musical instrument, using CrunchBang Linux... whatever floats your boat.

Given that a lot of people choose to eat meat, I think wild-harvested meat or fish is more appetizing than the "pink slime" I've been reading about in the news lately. I think hunting/fishing/gardening represents a primal urge to eat clean food straight from the source. Even though most of us don't need/want/choose to live like Adam & Eve, I hope we never completely lose "the call of the wild."

I've never been hunting. I went fishing a few times, but always wished I was at home playing computer games instead. Anyway those are my opinions; I hope I was not too controversial or off-topic. smile

^^ Agree for the most part... My only concern is for the nut cases who take these rights to the extreme like the neighborhood watch guy who killed a teenager in Florida just because he was scared...

I respect your rights to bear arms and hope that everyone truly understand what that means.

Your Sig line or tag is a tremendous statement by Thomas Jefferson, one I fear is no longer being taught, heard or if ppl even give a rats arse about anymore, which is really sad

No crunchbangers seem to own guns so it's safe to say this thread has derailed anywho.

But I do hope some gun owners join this thread sometime soon. big_smile

@ VastOne

I love this country for what it was founded on, and not what it has become. I believe the true constitution should never change, and the forefathers had it correct. I will uphold the constitution til the death of me, and wouldn't want it any other way.

The direction we're heading is the scariest thing, I'm of a younger generation, and my peers, imo, are complete idiots that care about what celebrities are doing instead of what is really important. Our country is going down the drain, but there are many like me that won't allow our liberties to be taken away.

The version of this that I like most - I believe Adam Savage said this on Mythbusters - is "Never point a gun at anything you don't intend to destroy."

I had an M16A2 when I was in the Army.  Wasn't particularly fond of it.  Never fired any other projectile weapon powered by smokeless powder.

What I find odd is, you have to pass a Federal check to own a handgun, rifle, or shotgun, but you can walk into any sporting goods store and pick up a compound bow, arrows, and broadhead tips without any kind of registration...and these can kill just as well as a hollowpoint.

Re: Gun Hobby Thread

Right Pvsage, and one could really make their own guns if they are machinists of some sort, and you can buy ammo anywhere as long as you are 18+. No other requirements. Anything can become a weapon really, and firearms should just be used properly.

@Vansgo
I'm a super peaceful, anti-war kinda guy. I just believe in being practical and armed. Things happen. I guess you can really say I'm a survivalist to the core. I like prepping long term food too, because I think it's practical.

Re: Gun Hobby Thread

^ Don't even need to be much of a machinist to make a basic shotgun or "zip gun"; hardest part is the trigger mechanism, but even that doesn't take much knowledge to figure out.

I actually bought a crossbow pistol online a few years ago; there wasn't even any kind of age verification.  The bolts I got with it just had target points, but I could have just as easily gotten the broadheads like those in the stupid Droid Razr commercial...not hard to imagine the kind of hole those will put in somebody...how quickly a kidney would bleed out, for example...

So here goes. Let's basically start off with what gun/guns you own, what may be your favorite caliber, gun manufacturer, and ammunition manufacturer.
I know not everybody may legally own firearms, but also I am not sure what gun laws are in every country so mabye enlighten me. tongue

Well... I'm not very much of a serious #! user (play with in a nice safe Virtualbox environment), but I probably do qualify as a 'gun nut'.

If it goes bang and gives of the smell of burnt nitrocellulose, odds are I'll like it at least a little wink  Not too much into historic or period guns, although I know some folks are.  Main specialty is long-range precision rifle competition, specifically F-Class.  What that is... is shooting at paper targets (with scoring rings) from 300yd out to 1000yd, and occasionally out past 1200.  Shot from the ground in the prone position, with the rifle either on a bipod or some sort of rest, with a high magnification scope.  I do well enough at it to shoot as a part of a couple teams, and have won some round metal thingys in places like Canada, Ireland, Scotland, England as well as the U.S. of A.

Other than that... I've shot HP Rifle (3-position standing/sitting/prone with slow and rapid fire stages from 200 to 600yds, iron sights and sling), Palma (prone w/ iron sights and sling from 800 to 1000yds), and some 'practical' rifle matches aka field aka tactical aka sniper matches.  Calibers... I shoot a *lot* of .223 Rem, both in gas guns and bolt guns, a metric poop load of .308 Winchester, and a smattering of other things like 6mm BR, 6mm Dasher, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5-284, .300 WM, .338 LM, as well as a handful of .22LR and 12 gauge shotguns.  In general my feelings about handguns is that the best use for one is to fight your way to a long gun! wink

One event we have coming up next month that I help out (as an instructor for the Precision Rifle Clinic) with is www.boomershoot.org - shooting at exploding targets from ~350yds on out to 700yds.  Very cool and a lot of fun.

YMMV,

Monte

absolutely positive.
i had to do this once (i pulled a knife in defence against two burglars)
and i would never hesitate the slightest bit to do it again.
just flashing the blade was enough to scare them off.
police arrested them at the end of the road. mission accomplished.
luckily, my little show-of-force was sufficient in this case.

EDIT: for those who might be interested in the knife, google for Walther Black Tac.

Edit: Forgot to added also own a compound bow, which provided the only legal shooting I could do outside of work.  lol

Re: Gun Hobby Thread

Sa80, bullpup assault thingy the Brits use. Don't keep tabs, so don't know if they still do. Am a big fan of many things that go bang n BOOM!!!! Tend to think of it this way, some brilliant folks must've made it the 2nd Amend of the US Constitution for good reason. They obviously felt it very important common people have the right to be armed. Also made it REAL clear their intent wasn't for sporting or hunting purposes. I bow to the wisdom of folks I consider wiser than myself.

Try to take the long view. Look around and see all the people who so desperately deserve to be shot and aren't being vs the occasional nutjob who freaks out and shoots unarmed folks who clearly shouldn't have been ... Kinda depressing subject for me overall. But with 200 MILLION firearms in circulation think the US public is handling the right and responsibility well. Except for the aforementioned crapheads that should be shot post haste. big_smile

Like many the realistic minded person ( well try to be), think firearms are a tool to be treated with respect. Though a tool obviously meant to be used to kill people, shrugs. Have zero problem with it, just wish more of the right people would start getting shot is all. Is that so wrong ?
