I wonder whether the Ubuntu ppa would cause some problems if I add it to my sources.list.
If it works, pinning it to that repository should do the trick (with i.e release=oneiric).

^ I would not do that, that opens too many issues.
I am going to dload the deb directly and use it..
Just tried to use it and gdebi is reporting a newer version is already installed .. I am using Sid.

I think Xfce is the best... of course that is very subjective and mean no harm to anyone in the statement.
(just my two cents below...)
yes, in terms of functionality, it's perfect - light, fast AND comfortable !
for me it's the perfect gnome2 replacement as gnome3 is not an option, neither is kde4 or unity. i hate bloat.
on older systems i stick with openbox, tint2 and keybindings. less comfortable, but really snappy. can't have it all !
