Re: Crack me up,, Suse Linux ala Linus Torvalds...

I'm going to shoot myself now, as Linus Torvalds said. lol

I thought unix and unix-likes such as linux have always been like this, and if you don't like it, change the permissions.

Re: Crack me up,, Suse Linux ala Linus Torvalds...

A little harsh I think... but I guess he can get away with it. That's what blogs are for. (and I'm reminded of the "opinions are like @holes" saying).

^ agreed, very harsh
Shouldn't a guy like that be able to fix such a minor problem? Like fist said, change the permissions...

As for the end part...next time don't get a mac!

In a way I see Linus' point in that the security writers are into it for the glory.
They were beating up on him for the tagging issue which in my opinion was bullshit.
And being a former BSD'er with the FreeBSD community, I can remember Free, Net and Open getting into it all the time
too.  You could take the SSL wars as just one example of what's constantly going on over there.  Their numb to it.

Re: Crack me up,, Suse Linux ala Linus Torvalds...

The only reason he gets away with as much as he has is because the kernel is named after him, simple as that.

Regardless of what he says, I'd rather have root/admin rights required for every "mundane" task as default. Teaches us not to take anything for granted, at least. Learn how to change it and add to wheel group/sudoers or whatnot if you desire, but always maintain the requirement for admin rights for changing settings (yes, even the clock, you have no idea how dangerous it is letting a program change your system time) or install stuff.

Prevents Android levels of moron-ism, imho, part of why you hear so much malware-related news about Android on a regular basis. Linus may disagree, but he thinks Android is a Linux distro just because it uses his kernel.

He did give us Git, after all, so I suppose I should be (somewhat) thankful and listen to him once in a while.

Problem is, he's not that charismatic, nor is he entertaining, imho.

Meh....

Re: Crack me up,, Suse Linux ala Linus Torvalds...

A few minutes ago, before Slob-san edited his latest post, he said something along the lines of "Linus can't ride a motorcycle."  Damn, it, I just *had* to search for that one! big_smile
http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/3655

Margie: Did you have a motorcycle when you were a kid?

Linus: Nope, I didn't have a motorcycle. I had a bike. I don't have a motorcycle now, either. I'm afraid of the damn things.

lol

It may be he was freaking out about the root password itself. If I remember correctly, a lot of the less important administrative stuff in Fedora is handled via PolicyKit, so you only need a user password, if the user is in the admin group. In the typical Fedora install, the first user is put in the admin group, and you get a box to tick for adding the newly created users to the same group. Fedora's approach might not be the best, but given that Linus uses it, he may be used to it.

He's been using Fedora for a long while now, and you can't do the things he's bitching about without at least the user password. Suse is more focused on the traditional methods. But, you know the drill, The Red Hat Way is the "industry standard".

Linus is awesome, he's the stereotypical grinch.

^RMS isn't strange. It's just a species-clash. I'm sure we'd be considered the strange ones if he ever brought us to his home planet (which I suspect is a giant hairball).

I think people just like to take jabs at Suse because of their partnership with Microsoft =P

Re: Crack me up,, Suse Linux ala Linus Torvalds...

I take jabs at Suse as it's the only OS i've ever seen which will bitch slap you to death with scripts
on any little thing you try to do which fits outside of their idiom.

They poked fun of Ubuntu for being Brown colored all the time.  Ha!
Green with a lizard/gecko or whatever that thing is??   Oh boy....

BTW, Redhat is probably a bigger butt kisser to MS than Suse is.
