wireless connection problems with realtek rtl 8188ce

I bought a new laptop last week. I didn't notice problems with wireless the first week... but now my wireless strength is going up and down like a yo-yo.

I installed #! 20111125 amd64
downloaded driver from realtek and did make / make install.... went fine
wireless is working, but strength is going up and down between 0 and 100%

I replaced network-manager with wicd, but doesn't make a difference.

I tried to solve it by going to testing or sid, but the problem stays the same.

Any ideas how to solve this?

Um...trying not to sound like the clichéd "help desk" saying "Did you make sure it's plugged in"...but perhaps the issue might be outside of your laptop? Maybe there's something causing intermittent interference or temporarily/periodically blocking the signal?

I tried a friends laptop (Windows Vista), it worked fine... hmm
My laptop had the same problem on his wifi network.
Another laptop (linux mint) with my wifi network: constant signal strength

I hope I didn't offend; just trying to be Sherlock about this (eliminate the impossible). If you simply had a brief flash of a strong connection at the beginning of a session that failed after a few seconds, I'd suggest the QOS=0 fix that works with my netbook wifi card and my new router, but your connection waxes and wanes...

Actually, there are a few problems that can be caused by static or a frozen state switch in a piece of hardware that can be fixed by completely discharging the system as described above...though it didn't sound to me like this was that kind of problem. (By the way, a faster, more complete way to discharge your system is to hold down the power button at least 10 seconds after unplugging and removing the battery; I consider this "more complete" because it thoroughly drains the capacitors in the power supply.)

Yes, try if it works with windows.

If it does not, it probably is mechanical, and you can go back to the shop to get it repaired
if it works in windows, I suggest debugging wpa_supplicant, without any network-manager. Let me know when.

Summary of the threads I posted:
- One problem was mechanical and went away after re-inserting the card.
- The second problem was router related - b/g/n protocol and selected channels on the router.

I booted into an older kernel (2.6.39-bpo.2-amd64) and till now wifi is working fine. So maybe it's a problem with the 3.2 kernel. I'll keep it like this for today. Conky will warn me if wifi goes up to 100 or down to 20 or less.

Well, if it works with the older kernel, then there is no need to re-install windows - we know it is not mechanical.

PS: can you post vendor:product id for the card. Use lspci -knn and filter the output for the wireless card.

So... it works with the older kernel, and !!! it works with the newer kernel from testing:
3.2.0-1-amd64

So it only seems to be the bpo kernel that caused problems. So... I hope to mark this thread [solved] tomorrow....

I still have problems with wireless...
Everytime I start my laptop I can't connect.
After killing nm-applet, stopping and starting networking and network-manager (sometimes several times) I get a connection (without nm-applet started).

This bothers me, as I used to have a connection immediately on my older laptop.

Sometimes I can't get it to work at all.

Edit:
I tried to remove firmware-realtek and installed the driver from the realtek website: than it connects immediately, but I have the signal strength dropping problem again.

Try to collect more info.
In stead of running network-manager as a daemon, run it in a terminal window in non-daemon mode.
Compare outputs when it is running OK and when it does not work.
This is how to do it:
Stop network-manager daemon:

sudo invoke-rc.d network-manager stop

Then in a terminal window, as your normal user:

touch nw.debug
sudo /usr/sbin/NetworkManager --no-daemon --log-level=INFO 2>&1 | tee -a nw.log

If I do that on my system, I need to have nm-applet running, to enter the password for my keyring, then the connection starts automatically.
WARNING: this generates quite some output, so keep aneye on available disk space.
If you want even more output, replace INFO by DEBUG in the command.

Should I try this with firmware-realtek installed and the driver from realtek removed?

There come a lot of information and stuff with the driver from realtek. There's a package called compat-wireless. Should I do something with this package as well?

I would go with the driver that comes with the latest kernel in backports.

The official proprietary driver was last certified with Ubuntu kernel 2.6.35-3.2

Release date = 2011-12-30
Operating system release = Ubuntu 11.10
Kernel version = 2.6.35-3.2
Release driver version = 0005.1230.2011

The one in github that you referred to seems to me a copy from an even older version of the official realtek driver.

If you have problems with the driver that comes with the 3.2 kernel, I would consider recompiling the driver from bleeding edge compat-wireless against the newest kernel.

So... the situation now is:
I use the kernel and firmware-realtek from testing.
When I boot my laptop there's no wireless connection. Nm-applet asks me for an authentication password, but it doesn't always work when I enter the wifi password.

I did as you suggested (stop nm-daemon and start nm with the log thing.

This only determines at what time the connection is established, right after boot or after the user has logged in and unlocked the keyring.

Than I my only suffer from the unable-to-unlock-keyring-issue.
Since I did this, it makes it a lot easier for me to connect. I don't have to restart services and/or nm-applet.

It's still strange, when I was using the driver from the realtek site, nm connected properly, I just had the signal strength problem.

Encryption key is off... is that normal behaviour? It is WPA2 encrypted.

You can try without network-manager, using ifupdown.
el_koraco has an excellent how to on it.
First try without roaming.
Search for 'el_koraco ifupdown supplicant roam'
