hello crunchbangers!

Hello people! smile

How are you'll doing? I am doing fantastic over here in Hyderabad, India. cool

Solaris was my first exposure to the Unix world way back in 2004-2005. It was again in 2009 that I had a chance to play with Linux. I installed Ubuntu and spent time with Ubuntu 8.10 through 11.04. The latest I used it was in 2011.

All the while I hoped to become comfortable with it, but never took it all the way. I just used it to browse for stuff, you know, and then some.

When I read that CrunchBang was a great distro for old hardware, I wanted to give it a shot again. It was on Sep 9 2011 that I have asked on unix.stackExchange.com which distro to go with and people told me that Crunchbang was just great. I downloaded crunchbang-10-20111125-i386.iso that day.

But at the time, I had already set my mind on Linux Mint and was yet again confused. Why are people suggesting me Crunchbang? A dark looking Linux? Really?

Over the last few days, I was itching to install what I had with me (A Crunchbang ISO) thinking I can just dump it if I don't like it and try Linux Mint as I had originally wished to.

The whole installation finished in about 20 minutes. The post installation in about 40 minutes (owing to my download speed). While the post installation script was progressing step by step, I kept discovering the features.

I wrote a little about it on my blog

It felt a lot different than Ubuntu. A lot lighter and minimal. It was awesome.

I knew instantly that I have finally found my Linux. A Linux that I could fall in love with. A Linux that I could grow old with. A Linux in which I would become a Guru level user. Do I have some company with people who feel the same?

Whoa! That is a lot of words. I know some of my sentences ended with propositions, but I guess I don't care about it too much now.

My sincerest thanks go to the people who were behind the creation of CrunchBang.

Re: hello crunchbangers!

First of all, dwm (mentioned in your blog) is not in the default CrunchBang install; there is no window manager, only X.  (EDIT:  It does, however, have suckless-tools installed.)

Second, Welcome to CrunchBang Bistro!  Enjoy the souvlaki.

Oh! Sorry about that. I think I misread it some where. My mistake entirely.

Thanks for pointing it out. I have updated my blog now.

Thanks for the welcome fortyseven. I am enjoying the momentum I had so far.

Do you recommend any things to be done after a new #! install?

Pretty much everything in #! is customizable so it's hard for me to recommend anything in specific. For me the first things I usually change is the background (obviously), conky, fonts, keyboard shortcuts (very important to me) and the login screen.

Any cool site you go for wallpapers?

I just burnt my hands trying to change the login screen. I am seeking help for it in another forum here.
How did you go about doing this?

I don't have any specific sites for wallpapers; I just use Google images or make my own.

Assuming you have the latest #! and are using Slim, themes are located in /usr/share/slim/themes. To change which theme Slim uses, open /etc/slim.conf, scroll down to the 'current_theme' entry and change it to the theme you want. See the screen shot.

Thanks for the support fortyseven. After I played around for a I while, I have been able to figure out how to change this yesterday.

It took time, but it was worth it.

Now I have a fabulous #! login screen.

Re: hello crunchbangers!

Forgot to include the screenshot earlier. smile

slim-fingerprint.jpg

I did not understand one thing. After I typed my username, I could not just tab into the password field. My heart skipped a beat as it felt like it stuck on me. I pressed tab again and waited a couple of seconds to see the cursor in the password field. At this moment, I tried to hit enter and it worked. I could now see the cursor in the password field. Is this the default behaviour? I did not see any such setting in slim.conf.

hehe!

I visited that thread earlier today and recollected that I used to get all my wallpapers from nik.bot.nu/browse.fu and posted link to it. smile

Until I know the reason for the tab issue, I will consider it a security feature. big_smile

Welcome to #! smile

Last time I downloaded an ISO from Linux Mint, it was well over 1GB. Compared to #!, that's a whole lot more...
