i saw it as well when I ran an update / upgrade. However I rec'd errors and it would not successfully install. when i did an apt-get -f install , then a Y for what was needed, rec'd a broken pipe error. I'm not at that machine now, so apologize for not giving better detail. Can do that tonight.

Wonder if my issue is isolated, or if others will also encounter the same problem

Installed with no problems on my system, though I had to manually download the headers and re-install the driver for my Belkin wifi dongle. (This was expected, because I had to add the driver manually before.) Desktop seems to be humming along with it installed.

This is super weird. I have the fglrx driver installed from the AMD website via smxi. dkms built the kernel module for the new kernel and I didn't have to reinstall anything?! I've never had this occurrence. Debian is the best!

I have to say since kernel 3.1, now I have 3.2 on Sid, I gained the first time some improvements I really could feel. Like my fan is now more quiet and also do not run all the time at 100 %, that was the case with older kernels. Flash is also running better for the first time, my CPU is not going to explode after 30 minutes like before. All on an Intel legacy laptop with integrated graphics.

Hmmm...possible fly in ointment...boot messages show fatal errors with cpufreq, and tty1 has that randomly ignoring keystroke issue I've seen mentioned elsewhere. My login is "peter", but I might have to type "ppeetteerr" or "peetterr" or...it would be just dumb luck if I were able to enter my password under these conditions. So far it looks like it's only tty1 that's afflicted. No such problem with 2.6.39-bpo.2-amd64.

EDIT: Nevermind...now I'm getting the same ignored keystrokes with 2.6.39. hmm

I've always had that issue with 2.6.39-686bpo, it also shows my password in plaintext as I type it. My solution was to just stop using tty1. There were a few changes made to how cpu throttling works recently (I get a lot of deprecation warnings in 2.6.39), so it doesn't surprise me that you might have some issues running that kernel with the debian stable version of cpufrequtils.

I finally seemed to solve the issue, I just wish I had a better understanding of what I did and why it worked.

Essentially I got rid of, and by that I mean copied elsewhere so that in /var/cache/apt/archives there were no linux images at all. I then ran the update / upgrade and it was successful. I then restarted, but did not see the new image in the grub menu and when I went to log in, it ran into problems b/c it was still looking for the old image. Luckily since I dual boot with Ubuntu, I could enter into the filesystem from there and put back the old image I removed from the mentioned path. Again I restarted and this time the 3.1.0 image was now visible in the grub menu, along with the 2.6 image.

So long story short, it is working now. Now back to my black and tan, oh and my homework.

Installed, everything`s smooth like a glove.

Edit, a little later; Not that smooth it seems, installed wine and spotify, result = spotify went CrunchBang! Will investigate further and return later in the help section if necessary.

On my new Thinkpad Ultra-thin laptop, I installed both Crunchbang and Archbang.

With #!Crunch my Wireless would not show - anywhere. Not in NM or terminal search.
But, everything Wireless worked with Arch.

Also, my 3G USB Modem works with #!Crunch and Debian but not with Arch/Linux.

Weird or so I thought.

I discovered that Radeon and Wireless drivers that Thinkpad uses are not compatible with Debians Free Software Policy.

I did manager to get the new squeeze+backports 3.1 kernel installed, as well as, Iceweasel-beta browser ... no problems really.

I've googled around and I think that I understand this to not really be a problem. Anyone able to fix it or is it just as well to ignore it?

At boot I get: (abbreviated versions. I'm kind of lazy big_smile )

^It notifies me of not inserting intel and ppc modules, but it loads my amdk8 module, so it's not a problem. If the appropriate governor was not loaded, your machine would heat up considerably.

^^ & ^: That's what I'm seeing too; it's saying that it's not loading modules for CPU's I don't have in my system. Only reason I was/am concerned is the "fatal" message...usually Linux gives feedback on a "no news is good news" basis, and "fatal" tends to be a not good thing. In other words, I would have expected the "not loading xxx module because you don't has this CPU" messages to be completely suppressed. (I guess that's something to file as a bug report upstream to the cpufrequtils devs.)

I very much doubt it's an upstream thing. We're using an older version of cpufrequtils with a fresh kernel. There's been some changes to the cpu frequency scaling code in the kernel, which is probably reflected in the newer versions of cpufu. Unless people running Sid report these issues, it's probably just an inconsistency, or as mynisBSD would say, a clash of kernel and userland.

big_smile If you really wanted to satiate your curiosity, you could apt-pin a more recent version of cpufrequtils.

Every new kernel has new free drivers. radeon, nouveau and i915 are part of the main kernel tree. You just install xserver-xorg-video-ati, because they're loaded as modules, and it leaves room for the various driver combos, proprietary and free. I was blown away when dkms rebuilt my proprietary module. That didn't use to be the case.
