look man, the fact of the matter is that whenever you go on linux forums you come along people asking homework-questions. there are even forums which explicitly prohibit this kinda thing, and will ban you for posting stuff like this. it doesn't really matter if it is your homework or anyone else's.
now, luckily, our beloved #! forums aren't like that. you can see that from the very first response your post got, by lain, who said something along the lines of 'you are not supposed to ask homework-questions but i'll help you out anyway'. in the process of him explaining stuff, some others chimed in, some of which might have peculiar sense of humor (like Awebb
)
in the end, however, he is still providing you with tips on how to find out the answer to your question.
the bottom line here is this: people here are volunteers. you should be happy you got help in the first place. people could've just ignored you and you wouldn't have been able to help that hot girl and have foregone the possibility of ever boning her because you impressed her with your python-skillz. that would be too bad for you, but as you don't give a fuck that others think people should do their homework, most of us here probably won't give a fuck if you'll ever get the girl or not.
i hope i was able to explain the responses you got here and the reason why.

Mods can you please move this because I really don't like seeing this thread bumping for the people that actually need help.
Are you kidding? You're one rant away from making this thread of the month, ahead of Slimjunk.

lmao.
@rhowaldt
like I said, I didn't know that people asking for help with their homework was such a huge deal on forums. The only class that I have taken that pertains computers is web design and I would have never thought about going to a forum for help. I said I was sorry, and I said thank you. Your right, I should have just ignored what awebb said, and I even said I was sorry and thanked him. It also goes both ways too, because as long as it's not a forum rule, people who don't like that someone's asking a certain question should just not reply.
You make it sound like I didn't appreciate the help that I got on this thread, but I did. Even awebb's, when I went back and read the whole thing. I was just getting frustrated and I am sorry to anyone that I was rude to.
I really do think this is one of the best forums and that there are people who deserve a lot more credit than they get. People off the top of my head like sector, bacon, and vastone have spent hours helping me just because they are nice.
edit: Oh, and if you look very carefully you can see that I thanked awebb after he explained what he said. http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/post/168746/#p168746

@demarsjcd: i didn't mean to imply you were not thankful for the help you got. i was simply attempting to explain why you got some of the reactions you did. from your response i see you have understood what i said very well, for which i applaud you, because you are clearly a reasonable guy
i hope we can let the debate rest now.
there is one question left to answer though: was the girl happy with your help? do you see a future for the two of you?

Perfect! Of course what can one expect from a man whose name ends in bacon and has a sig line:
Ham and eggs. A day's work for a chicken, a lifetime commitment for a pig.
Forget the ham those rinds will get ya every time!

well, since I already have a girlfriend I guess it was just wishful thinking, but its always good to have a back up plan. Plus I got a number in the process
To me she is that girl that you wish you never let get away, so I'll just hold on as long as I can. But does a study session count as a date

Well, depends on what counts as solved: the python script or a laid classmate.

The irony is when "hot-chick" finds this thread and tells demarsjcd his work has no relevant use!:lol:
Congratulations, you've figured out the sound of one hand clapping...

Wow, your response to my post seems really "over the top" in relationship to what I wrote. Perhaps the stress of school is getting to you. It is difficult for me to remember that because I have been retired since 2007 but you should probably find a way to get a holiday and chill out, it's easier to learn if not so stressed.

I believe you can feel confident that the moderators here have seen this thread.
There is quite a bit to learn from this thread if we are open to it, and remember, even those who are just reading and not participating will be able to learn from it.
I imagine everyone is happy it is now solved. Good luck!
