Just did winecfg in terminal, Applications tab, added RCT.exe, clicked it, went to Graphics tab, and checked "Emulate a Virtual Desktop". Should work for any individual application
Like RCT2 when I install that!
And AoE!

Mainly I play Minecraft. For first person shooters I prefer Urban Terror, Enemy Territory, Sauerbraten and recently Nexuiz. Also I just learned yesterday that Micropolis is in the repos...it's the original Sim City game (one of my favorites) ported to linux. Also I have played World of Warcraft in Wine...works without any messing about with settings.
Anyone have any good RPG and MMORPG recommendations for Crunchbang? I prefer linux native but something that runs in Wine with as little tweaking as possible would work also. (Trying to stay away from WoW so I'm looking for some new games)

The Battle for Wesnoth is a pretty decent strategy RPG. I used to enjoy playing that at breakfast time for some reason in my old office. GOG (Good Old Games) is also worth a look - people have written a list at http://www.gog.com/en/mix/games_that_wo … nux_wine_1 detailing what works well in WINE and there are a few excellent RPG and adventure games on it. Obviously anything DOS will likely work extremely well with DOSBox. Sorry if someone's already mentioned any of these; I have to confess that I'm actually having breakfast right now so only gave the overall thread a cursory glance.
For my part, I enjoy playing Humble Bundle games on Linux, as well as 'Platinum'-rated WINE games through Steam, and the odd other one like OpenTyrian and Minecraft - but I do most of my gaming on consoles.

not a big gamer these days, but like to flash back some nostalgia. recognize?
For puzzle games check out Pathological. It's in the repos.

Ah ... Doom. I lost many a lunch hour trying to hex edit that. I remember I once ended up with the epilepsy-inducing hyper mode, but had -1 health for some reason. Basically a single hit would kill me but I'd walk around after that unable to open doors.
Duke 3D brooks no comparison. What a fantastic game. There's a cross-platform port of (EDuke32) it that I've had working pretty well on #!.

One more thing which I don't think has been mentioned by anyone in this thread is ScummVM - http://www.scummvm.org/ - which is a great little bit of kit that allows you to run many old adventure games perfectly. Usually if they won't work in DOSBox they'll work in Scumm.

The first thing that comes into my mind concerning scummvm is "Monkey Island" .. what a great game!

Amazing game. There are a couple of very decent point & clicks available as freeware, which are easily runnable on Linux (ScummVM):

Beneath a Steel Sky is fantastic, and Flight of the Amazon Queen is great too. Lure of the Tempress isn't bad, but not great either.

It's not a ScummVM game but you should be able to run it in DOSBox.
It seems like some abandonware sites are carrying it. Found this one with a working download link at the bottom of the relevant page (.zip archive):

D: I'm having trouble getting Oddworld Abe's Oddysee from GOG running in wine. D: It opens up a window then closes it and this is what the console says:

It's always a good idea to check the WineHQ site for information about ratings (look out for Platinum wherever possible as they run almost perfectly) if you need to run games in Wine.
Installing 1.2.X might be a good idea; someone on WineHQ has tested the GOG version of Oddysee in 1.2 and rated it 'Gold'

Something else you might want to look at is PlayonLinux, a fantastic front-end for Wine:
http://www.playonlinux.com/en/
You can easily configure different Wine versions and debugging etc.

I'm having one hell of a time trying to get a 1.2 version. D: PlayOnLinux sounds cool, I'll look at it.
Why is it so hard to get the build-deps for wine? I can't find one place that lists what I'll need.

If you've installed it correctly is there any chance you can get it working on Steam (through PlayOnLinux)?

Thanks! I've got 1.2.3 building now, if that doesn't work I'll give your .deb a try.
checkinstall tells me command not found
what did I do wrong? Nevermind, installed it.

Since GOG downloads are DRM-free, I can see if I can get it working on my set-up. I already own the game, but only on Steam, so I'm not trying to nab a free game or anything

Are you using WINE to run it Xardas? I haven't played that game in ages, either. Much better than AoE3.

i need to get dungeon keeper working again.
for anyone who wants to play theme hospital on newer OS (linux or windows), try corsix th, client for the game-you need a copy of the original game files though. not finished yet but works pretty well so far

Well yes, but since I only have wine version 1.1.42, the performance could be much better.. So I installed it on my windows partition. That's a shame though, I really hoped to get it working fluently on #!..
I will try and see if I can get wine 1.2 to install, on winehq it says AoE works better then.
