Re: #! CrunchBang Logo Competition

Does 'free' really have to trump style here? Sure, Helvetica is a commercial typeface, but it's also a hell of a lot more classy than any of the alternatives that have been presented here - especially Deja Bland up there. hmm

#! is by no means a completely free distro. It's prepared to compromise some freedoms for conveniences - codecs and the like. I don't think a logo with a restrictively licensed font is any worse than, say, having Flash. Especially given that there is nothing stopping us providing a suitable SVG of the logo on the Wiki, or with the distro itself.

What are your thoughts? smile

Re: #! CrunchBang Logo Competition

Hi,

I have done this quickly (draft again), I post it even if I finally think this wil not make a good logo, maybe usable for wallpapers is someone enhances the rendering : crunchbangnologo.png

I will try to make something more serious this week end whenever I have some time.

So far, I like san's submit the most (post 76). I can't imagine crunchbang with bold characters.

Cheers,

alef

Nice, except for the fact that "cb" reads as "db" when layed out that way!

So, how about editing the lettering somewhat along these lines (just a suggestion, you should probably edit it with your better graphical skills) — or maybe just "#!" as on the right side:

I hope you don't mind these suggestions, San!

No of course not, and you are absolutely right! It is doesn't look like "cb". I just tried to do something symmetrical and softish, inside the weaved hard rectangular something tongue Your first suggestion is what it should have looked like. Thanks!

Well, it looks good with the text that way.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss free fonts. Can you tell a huge difference between these two typefaces?

helv_nimbus.png

One is Nimbus Sans L (which is GPL'd), and one is Helvetica.

Unfortunately Nimbus doesn't have a 'light' or 'thin' version sad so just switching it out for Helvetica in the case of the current Crunchbang typeface isn't possible. I'm not sure just creating an SVG of a licensed font suddenly gives people the right to consider it separate from the licensed font.

I think it's only right to use something legally if you're going to use it for promotional or possibly commercial uses. If you're willing to pay whatever license fees are required, then I don't see anything wrong with it. Of course in the interest of promoting things like the Open Font Library, I think it would be nice to at least use something in the spirit of Free culture. Or at least come up with something completely customized just for #!.

Re: #! CrunchBang Logo Competition

Dear all,

I come from buying a hp2133, and wanted to minimize kernel
requirements within Ubuntu, so, just today (!), I came across your
project: thank you for your work! Then I came across the "logo
competion" thing...

So, well, I'm not that much into the project, but I hoped I could
help. This is what I did. I do not use inkscape, and I rather use
vector graphics (SVG) above gimp-made for these things, so I
coded EPS from scratch.

Pros:

* minimal size (file .eps.gz is 1761 bytes !!!);

* no font property issues. Actually, no font loading at all, as the
characters are drawn through primitives (or is this a 'cons'?);

* some customization: there are comments here and there, mostly in
the header, which explain, for example, how to change colours, or the
tilting parameter;

* exact measures: removing the tilting, proportions follow some
geometric pattern, and there are no mouse-driven coordinates;

* geometric pattern and font shapes do interact (see e.g. letter
'g' within the dot). This would have hardly happened with
non-customized fonts, and/or non-exact coordinates.

Cons:

* actually, the graphical idea overall is not that strong, and many
other ideas in the forum are probably better;

* not showing the original symbols #! plainly, as desired by some of
you;

* more or less, needs 3 colours (background, foreground, and
bang-dot). 2 colours with bang-dot = foreground is possible but not
that nice;

* at the moment, it is badly coded, so that background cannot be made
transparent. This can be solved with some extra work.

bye
Andrea

Re: #! CrunchBang Logo Competition

sorry, I could only upload
the .pdf file
(produced with ps2pdf), which however comes with built-in encryption, and is un-customizable. This because the "image" files allowed are only .pdf and various pixelized formats.

I also uploaded a "fake" pdf,
here,
which allows you to download the original .eps file, with the .pdf header line "%PDF-1.4" on top.
It can be used with the following tedious procedure: download the image; edit the file, by cutting out the first line; open with any postscript viewer such as gv or evince. I didn't find a better solution...

I could have posted the source of the file: that's 300 short ascii lines, but didn't look much an improvement.

Re: #! CrunchBang Logo Competition

Hi,

First time here and just want to share some designs.  I haven't used crunch much but it looks like a great distro, especially since all my machines are pretty old and need something on the lighter side.  If i'm on the right track with any of these logos let me know, if not I can go back to the well and draw up some more concepts (no pun intended).

pastebin?

Or just use something with png/svg support?

If it's imageshack thats the issue, try photobucket.

I took the liberty of pulling that pdf file into Inkscape and outputting a 500px wide png file. I hope that's okay. I hosted it on my server, if there is any problem with that just let me know.

Here's another idea I had today.  I wanted something that had a low res bitmap look.  btw how do you post images so they show up larger?  I'm using image shack.  Is that the problem?

Re: #! CrunchBang Logo Competition

hi!
A second try is here:
cbang_sportiel_try2

This time it is just a photograph of a piece of paper...
Playing with characters is more ambitious, but the drawing looks overall more clean. The final h and g of the two words make the (!) and its shadow, although this is not super-clear...

btw, concerning the issues with the .eps file of the previous posts... I tought that
the link I used first worked for most people (but maybe there are problems with the https restrictions of my mail server... it is NOT my idea of using the mail server for hosting home pages!)

Re: #! CrunchBang Logo Competition

A very rough sketch for a very simple idea which must have crossed a thousand minds before mine:

3808296.t.png

3808313.t.png

3808306.t.png

3808214.t.png

In this version, the black background should be replaced with transparent:

3810447.png

A scrot of the transparent version in action:

3808342.t.png

I repeat that these are rough drafts, very quickly done with the GIMP. Feel free to adapt the idea and/or modify the images if you wish.

Re: #! CrunchBang Logo Competition

hi!
yet another variant, on the side that H and G build up the (!):
sportiel_try3
this time with a very clean font. Again, the original is a .eps, super-small (~1200bytes if gzipped), in SVG and with exact measures, with various customization available. The bad rendering came from imagemagick conversion (I expected more...).
Readability, also at 60px, should be not too bad.

Thank you! Actually, since the hash sign is usually "italic" by default, I wanted to keep it that way. Nevertheless, here's a "non-slant" version:
