Here's my first crack at it. I've shown it in a few different forms. The font is Nimbus Sans L. Not quite as light as the current font used, but otherwise it's just about as identical as you can get IMO.
that's absolutely great!
i would prefer first design, but more simpler - without shadows, borders etc. just strict b/w contrast logotype..
however, congratz!!

#!, enough said
Absolutely, the logo or logo type, strong as you can get is #! it is just perfect - how it is drawn is down to application. So long as it is #! it is crunchbang, be it a ninja, some pixels, a perspective grid is just a creative touch that we can play with forever.
As for highly polished art then rfquerin is the only one going that way so far.

OK! Unfortunately I haven't learned to use graphic editor programs like Gimp yet, but I have an idea.
I know these could be done in minutes but it was a couple of hours for me.
I made them with Gnumeric, made screenshots and copied into one image, resized in Gimp. LOL!
So some basic variations of my idea:

4!-s combined to a #
Further ideas:
I know 3 of them looks quite similar, but as you can see there are infinite variations just on scales, it's hard to find which looks the best.
On simplicity of #!: These look quite simple. Maybe less sqareshaped !-s would be better, but i don't think colours should be used...
On speed os #!: The biggest component of the logos reminds me to a shuriken. Maybe with modifying the shape of the !-s, would make the logo it was almost spinning. Another possibility is to put arrowhead on the top of the !-s, but rotating it a bit might make it look more dynamic too...
If anyone likes the concept please feel free to make your version. Team-work > race, CrunchBang should get the best possible logo!
Plus it would take me ages to try out my ideas, cause i suck at useing Gimp/Inkspace

originally a Hindi image wiki page
It does kinda look like that, but it's because it's a stark, harsh image, more akin to those fascist stylings, than the fluidness of the hindi original.
the cross-stitch style one (the last one) doesn't look like that so much though, and it's my fav anyway.

but you played before me ..... and WHAT A SET !!!
rf, you killed the game !!
LOL. I really doubt I've killed the game. The 23rd is a long way away. Plenty of time for plenty of good ideas. Heck, I'll probably post another 10 #! wallpapers before then! LOL!

Ha! That made me laugh.. A couple of years back I was doing some logo entries for XMMS2. One of them got called out in a similar way. (http://xmms2-contest.blogspot.com/2007/ … uerin.html)
btw, none of my entries there won (and I did 15 of them!)

Well you must just be really unlucky.

No. I had no idea what that symbol was (the arrow cross flag). I'm your typical Canadian.. probably too polite and too tolerant for most tastes.

Grr! I don't like nazis and skinheads! I didn't thougt they look similar to the nazi symbol
I knew I should bucket fill them with that leopard pattern!
Yep! That arrow cross flag was here in Hungary...

I thought about how the logo undoubtedly leads to a geometric feeling.. all straight lines and right angles and such. So rather than fight it, I thought I'd try and accentuate it. Maybe it gives a feeling of design and thoughtfulness. Dunno.
It is maybe a bit too fiddly for use at smaller sizes though. Maybe the working grid lines would have to be simplified and/or fattened up to work at smaller sizes. Anyway, here it is on both white and darkish backgrounds. I always seem to throw a perspective view in.. just to be fancy I guess.

Hi,
As I'm not native English speaker, I am wondering about the relationship between the distro's name and the current #! symbol. Is # related in some way with crunch, and ! with bang ? Should these symbols necessarily be kept in the crunchBang logo ?
regards,
a

Here's some small variations on my first logo concept. I've done a version without drop shadows, a version with perspective text and an outline version. I've also monkeyed with using a different typeface just for fun.

the outline verison is really nice, maybe you should try the letters in outline also.

Unfortunately that font is non-free.. it's called NeoSans I believe.
There is a probably a free font out there that would suffice too though. It's just what I picked from my system spur of the moment.

Really simple. Just a cool way one of the fonts I use prints "#!"

I was mulling over an origami-type idea today. This is what I came up with. There are a couple of variations, one with outlining, dark and light backgrounds. It is kind of heavy on the gradients, so I thought I'd try out a flat coloured version as well (the pair at the bottom):
