Howto Google Earth on Crunchbang Statler 32 & 64bit [updated]

Tested on 32bit and 64bit Statler

Google Earth seems to throw up error messages lately:

setup.data/setup.xml:1: parser error : Document is empty

setup.data/setup.xml:1: parser error : Start tag expected, '<' not found

Couldn't load 'setup.data/setup.xml'

So here is the cure:

1. First install “lsb-core”
sudo apt-get install lsb-core

2. Download and extract Google Earth to a temporary dIrectory:

wget http://dl.google.com/earth/client/current/GoogleEarthLinux.bin && chmod +x GoogleEarthLinux.bin && ./GoogleEarthLinux.bin --target /tmp/ge

I did this with Crunchbang 64, and the Google earth gui installer opened automatically, so I just clicked "install" and that was it.

However, if yours doesn't, launch the installer like this:

3. Run the installer:

cd /tmp/ge

./setup.sh

The new Google Earth didn't give me any gtk2 problems, if yours does, do this:

4. Change to the temp directory and change setupgtk to setupgtk2:

cd /tmp/ge/setup.data/bin/Linux/x86/

sudo mv setup.gtk setup.gtk2

cd /tmp/ge

5. Run the installer again:

./setup.sh

Now the Google Gui installer will open.

I have had to use this method on three machines, you may not get errors installing the normal way on your machine. There may also be another fix, but this is the way I did it.

To use an Application like Google Earth ... would it be advisable to add the Google repositories to your sources.list first?

As well. As I said at the end, there is probably another fix, but I didn't add the repos. I prefer to manually install 3rd party apps.

Obviously, the bonus with adding the repos is that you get all the latest updates smile

it crashes Debian when I try to run it. The same way it crashes from Virtual Box. just a black screen with a blinking _

Just be prepared for your update time to slow down after you add the google repositories.

One fix has been posted Here. Which in short says to run this in a terminal:

echo "Acquire::http::Pipeline-Depth "0";" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/90localsettings

Back in the olden days, when I used Windows ... Google Earth slowed my Vista down to a crawl or froze it completely.

From where I am now, in Linux and #! ... I don't use Google Earth or the Google repros., at all.

I think I installed using that package in the repo. It basically downloads the binary then converts it into a deb.

I experienced the error described by richs-lxh
My - less elegant - workaround has also worked in the past when I have experienced errors from the googleearth website packages:

"borrow" the deb packages from medibuntu repository
There are two packages; install the data package first, then the second package. On my 32 bit squeeze & testing distros this gives no problems. Current version is googleearth 5.1.3509 from medibuntu

So... I've tried installing it manually and through the repository, and in both cases it gives me "Google Earth has caught signal 11", because it can't find the Nvidea drivers that are properly installed... (I have also turned off system eye candy, but it doesn't fix it.) The last page of this seems to solve this by turning off starting tips. But I can't do this because when I go to the file ~/.config/Google/GoogleEarthPlus.conf, the relevant section does not exist.

I would like to try installing the Medibuntu repositories version, but when I try to add the repos with

sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list && sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet --allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get --quiet update

it gives me a 404.

Could I get your advice about what to try next? Thanks...

I never did get this to work properly with a 5200FX. I did eventually get it installed and running but it wasn't properly accelerated and hence unusable. nVidia drivers don't do OpenGL properly, and certainly not using the drivers Google Earth is probably looking for. Might work better with Nouveau drivers?

In contrast, it works great with the (rather crappy) Intel built in graphics. Open source drivers, finally quite good in recent versions, a good OpenGL from Mesa, and I can zip about very smoothly.
