hey
i'm interested in finding out new programs
i want to replace my gedit with something light
something like leafpad which is perfect only that it doesn't have the syntax highlighting and advanced search options
gedit lags really bad when opening a file
i would also like to replace thunar with something similar that supports tabs
i tried pcmanfm but i really don't like the way it compresses file names, pcman preferring to have 6 short lines for names other than 2 long ones

For your text editor, what about nano? It's already installed in Statler. I think the command would be something like 'terminator --command="nano $1"' if you want to be able to open text files in nano with a right-click from a file browser.
I don't know of GTK alternatives to PCManFM that support tabs; they all seem to have their own issues.

@klausi - Check Midori's extensions, I pretty sure it has one for ad blocking. If it really doesn't have it, maybe you need to get a newer version of Midori.

geany is another fairly light text editor with syntax highlighting, and other features. I think it's a bit faster than gedit.

Install vim. It's fast, light, offers powerful search/replace using regex, 26 named cut/paste buffers, and syntax highlighting for virtually all languages and many Linux system config files.
Cheers,

^+1 for vim b/c there is gvim, which helps you a lot, with menus and mouse to learn the special vim stuff.

Yeah, Vim is quite too professional! Really useful, but mainly if you are a programmer or similar! Never tried gvim though!

well, i'm not into all that learning new shortcuts that only work on vim
i'd rather have a standard editor with standard options
i do use geany for programming but i want a simpler version of it when i read something

There's some information at the wiki on non default apps ( http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/other_apps ) that includes some lightweight alternatives. Hopefully more suggestions will get added as people use the entry.
Probably not what you're looking for, but I'll just mention that Fox toolkit (lightweight GUI) comes with some sample programs including adie (text editor) and pathfinder (file manager). XFE is also built based on Fox Toolkit. Fox toolkit is a more lightweight interface that GTK+ 2.
I'll also give a quick mention to my favorite editor SciTE. It's highly customizable. Am trying to replicate my custom SciTE settings with Gvim and finding it runs slower once I add all the extra functionality. It's also taking me months to try to configure similar settings using Gvim. SciTE has code to support folding and lexical analysis built in (C/C++), so you don't need to add a lot of interpreted code to get some of that functionality. By the way, Geany and SciTE both use the Scintilla editing control. I do a lot of customizing to SciTE to get it do many things it won't do out of the box. Have not been able to find another editor as easily customizable for my particular needs. SciTE uses GTK+2 and runs in X Windows. If I'm in console mode, I'll use nano or pico (from alpine) for quick edits. To just read a text file quickly in console, I'll use less.

From K Mandla blog: light software applications: cl and gui.
I don't think they get any lighter!
