[Resolved] Run applications installed by Synaptic Package Manager?

After I install an application from Synaptic package manager, I am unsure how to access the application that I just installed. I don´t see the applications showing up in the Main menu (Right-click or Super+Space).

I installed Open Office and a couple battery level monitoring tools.

A) How do I access the installed applications?

B) How do I add those entries to the Main menu?

I'm new to this distro, so please bear with me.

Thanks!

You can run 'em by using the run menu (alt+f2) and typing in the name of the app.  To add it to the menu use obmenu (right click -> preferences -> openbox -> menu editor).

Re: [Resolved] Run applications installed by Synaptic Package Manager?

First thing i usually install is xfce4-appfinder (its in the repo's), then add this to the menu

(on your right click)
preferences>Openbox config>Gui menu editor

This is where you add things to the menu, use appfinder to know what you have installed and their commands too

Ok, so I'm in the Gui menu editor for Openbox and I am trying to add writer (oppenoffice) to the Office label.

Label: Writer

Id: blank
Action: Execute
Execute: ?

I installed the app finder, but how do I know what to put in the Execute box? Thanks!

*UPDATE: From appfinder I inputed the command listed in the more info. The command: ooffice-writer %U didn't seem to work.

Re: [Resolved] Run applications installed by Synaptic Package Manager?

In execute box you put the name of the app. You can add OpenOffice in menu by writing  ooffice in the execute box, if you want to go straight to OpenOffice Writer it's oowriter.

OpenOffice Calc is oocalc
OpenOffice Draw is oodraw
OpenOffice Impress is ooimpress
OpenOffice Math is oomath

Usually when you install an app you can assume that you can launch it by typing it's name for example in gmrun (alt+f2). Like if you had Exaile (audio player), you type exaile in gmrun or menu, but sometimes it's not like that. So usually apps are installed in /usr/bin folder, where I check what is the actual name of the launch file.

Ok. But how was I supposed to know that the commands were oocalc, oodraw, etc...? Where could I have found this information? Why can't I enter the command listed in xf4ce-appfinder?

Re: [Resolved] Run applications installed by Synaptic Package Manager?

Made a wiki entry for further reference, still need some editing, and I think it should be merged with the autostart.sh wiki entry (since it's much of the same)... I'll do that later today...

Thank you I was looking for this info as well. This is probably the most needed documentation for the distro.

Hum. Just curious, but why hasn't someone built in an automated script? This is the sort of thing that computers are designed to do after all.

No, I'm not volunteering. I've got a bunch of overdue short stories that I have to complete! I have to admit that the idea does intrigue me though.
