Dr. Bunsen @ #!

The CrunchBang project has a new build server. Dr. Bunsen is a new VPS on Linode, running Debian Lenny. The server has been added to the CrunchBang Project's small, but growing number of virtual and real private servers. This new server is being funded by the project's use of Google AdSense, sales from our shop, contributions by our only commercial sponsor, R1Soft Linux Hot Copy, and by donations collected from generous donors within our community. A big thank you goes out to everyone who has contributed to the project, you are all stars!

Regarding the server itself, Dr. Bunsen will be used to build new CrunchBang images. This has previously been performed on my own hardware, using a 1MB internet connection. As you can probably imagine, having such a slow connection has meant the process of building images and then uploading the results has been somewhat laborious and slow. It has probably been the biggest bottleneck with regards to progress. Hopefully, this new server will fix that and be a real benefit to the project.

Also, for anyone who might be interested, I have created a new Identi.ca account for Dr. Bunsen and I will be scripting some automated reports which will be sent to the Identi.ca account when new builds are processed etc. I will also try to write some more scripts to show some basic statistics about how many builds have been attempted, whether or not they were successful, and the types of builds which have been performed.

I have been running some test builds on the new server this morning and the initial results have been interesting. The build process now takes just over 20 minutes, which is fantastic, considering that it used to take several hours! Good stuff! smile

I'm obviously not as technically minded as you so I think some of that went over my head. But it sounds great.

CrunchBang moving forward, to where it belongs. big_smile

Re: Dr. Bunsen @ #!

I can't speak for others, but personally I don't want to hear that you're playing with Mr Bunsen's 'bits' roll

Anyway good, good, and nice to hear that the #! project is fiscally solvent.

Does Dr. Bunsen have any sort of burner?

I hope you understand Dr Bunsen is a muppet, and his "assistant" is beaker.
Also, He probably does own a Bunsen burner, being a scientist... though on the other hand, his experiments are questionable, so I'm not sure where he got the degree.

Re: Dr. Bunsen @ #!

Are we really about to argue about the muppets?

I doubt it, i just wasn't sure if you knew why I said 'beaker'.

EDIT: On second thought, it could be kind of fun.

The builds taking place at the moment are just for testing and refining the actual build process, they are really not fit for anything. As soon as any real builds happen, I will release them into the wild. Talking of which, I would eventually like to have daily, or at least weekly builds, so I am now looking for some low-cost servers for use as file servers. If anyone has any recommendations, I would love to read them. smile
