Wow 67 pages! Damon, what sound problems do you have before running this script? Mine seems to be OK as it is...

lol, yeah 67 pages, but you really only need to read the first post.

I guess I should have added that I'm running a full 5.1 setup, I suppose if your on a laptop or using $15 kmart speakers this could quite possibly be a waste of time tongue

5.1, schmive point one.  Going into a decent-quality stereo (two channel + subwoofer) system, the latest ALSA in the repos (1.0.18rc3) works just fine for me.  How much of you mp3 and CD collection was actually encoded in 5.1 anyway? tongue  My netbook's onboard sound isn't on par with a component CD player, but what is?

Connected to a 42" HDTV, and my family basically uses the computer as an entertainment center, all the movies we watch are in 5.1, hence the 5.1 sound

Glad alsa works no problem for you, unfortunatly it doesn't for me,
just posting something I thought may be helpful to some.

If you're able to use your PC as the heart of your home theater system, I think that's great!

ALSA 2.2 didn't get your 5.1 working?  What did you end up using for 5.1 sound?

Re: Alsa Upgrade (currently 2.2) - several ubuntu based ver.

gedit .asoundrc

(You can use vi or nano to edit it if you don't have gedit).

Then add the following:

pcm.!default {
type plug
slave.pcm "surround51"
slave.channels 6
route_policy duplicate
}

save and reboot

Got the actual 5.1 working,

for some strange reason the sound is terrible on my system, until I do that alsa upgrade
for example: the !#crunchbang login sound is cut in half and sounds scratchy, tvtime sounds alright, but movies or music are really high pitched, scratchy, and generally just sound terrible.
