Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

I was able to get uxa to work with crunchbang 9.04 and all i had to do was add the ubuntu-x-swat repos and upgrade the intel drivers.

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

paste these two lines in ----

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu jaunty main

grab key with this script from alan pope's blog

http://swik.net/Ubuntu/Planet+Ubuntu/Al … Keys/cygyw

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade

make device section of xorg.conf look like this ----

Section "Device"
        Identifier    "Configured Video Device"
        # ...
        Option        "AccelMethod" "uxa"
EndSection

thats it and as long as compositing is disabled I get smooth video playback without tears from lag. Although it does seem to have worked better in gnome it hasn't broken my x and performance is great.

Re: Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

little addition im not even sure if the xorg.conf edit is necessary because the new intel drivers default to uxa from what i have read.

Re: Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

Monkey when you run

lspci -vv

What do you get for memory allocation for the graphics?

I was noticing how when I'm on "unnamed" site in #! scrolling caused some tearing and was laggy. I switch over to XP Pro and it's a lot smoother. I'm using the x4500HD and when I ran the pci list code I got horrible graphics allocation figures. I'm not on #! now so I'm not 100 percent about the numbers. I'm pretty sure one was 256mb (or kb) and the other was 4mb (or kb). I spent part of my day looking for an answer and did see some threads that use a workaround similar to yours. I just needed to see someone actually post specifically for the x4500HD.

Edit:

Not sure if you have the x4500HD as you don't mention but we share the same Chipset so I'm hoping I get the same results as you did.

im in the middle of setting up a lxde desktop at the moment so i will get more together later but i did have to set some memory allocation in xorg.conf let me backtrack a bit and i will post soon.

Re: Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

Yours:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
Subsystem: Acer Incorporated [ALI] Device 0141
    Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx+
    Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx-
    Latency: 0
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 2296
    Region 0: Memory at f8000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4M]
    Region 2: Memory at d0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
    Region 4: I/O ports at 1800 [size=8]
    Capabilities: <access denied>

This is what I get with mine:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
    Subsystem: Lenovo Device 20e4
    Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx+
    Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx-
    Latency: 0
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 2297
    Region 0: Memory at f4400000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=4M]
    Region 2: Memory at d0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
    Region 4: I/O ports at 1800 [size=8]
    Capabilities: <access denied>

I noticed some people in Ubuntu Forums threads had high Region 0 and 2 memory allocations. Mine looked totally anemic in comparison! Some of the posters were using either the Intel GMA 945 or 950 chips even. Just scrolling through this message box is laggy. Ok we'll see how the tweaking goes with my #! partition.

Re: Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

my xorg.conf device section looks like this:

Section "Device"
    Identifier    "Configured Video Device"
    Option        "AccelMethod"        "UXA"
    VideoRam 258048
EndSection

ours are pretty much the same so i assume if you have followed the above directions you should be able to set it like this. until i set the videoram option i think i had a bit of a lag too.

Re: Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

Okay. I am in a mess here! It's been quite awhile since I've had to edit xorg.conf ever since things changed after 8.10 Ubuntu. I feel so strange having to refer to another distro but it is what it is. Anyhow I don't use the CD command too often and do not remember what steps to take to run the launchpad.update. I googled "gpg error" and tried a couple of examples.

I also had a slight mishap. Does Terminator automatically enter for you what you paste into the box? I intended to copy-and-paste an example and enter the gpg key manually. Well Terminator automatically ran the script and downloaded the key for me... don't really remember what key in the example it was

So here is the current sudo apt-get update for me:

W: Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu/dists/jaunty/Release Unable to find expected entry mainx/source/Sources in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)

E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

So this is where I'm at? I also don't remember where the file xorg.conf is at. It's been awhile since I've edited one of those files! I'm sorry to inundate you with this but I really want this to work for me! From what I'm reading there are problems galore with my chipset in most of the distros I've looked at. I see conflicting posts on the Ubuntu forums about how well 9.10 works for some and other don't fare as well. My experience with Linux is that it is very hardware-machine specific. type of OS. I can't use this distro on my R51e  b/c anything 9.04 doesn't play nice with the Radeon x200M card- however Ubuntu 9.10 works very well on that Thinkpad (compiz effects, wolfenstein: enemy territory, etc work very well for it OOB).

EDIT:

Found out I mistyped

deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu jaunty main

wrong. I added an x by mistake last night :double blush:

so now when I run my sudo apt-get update I get no out of place listings. Okay I just need to find out where that xorg.conf is at and we'll see how it goes from there.

Re: Intel Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)

Sounds good!

I'll be on and off here tomorrow. I may do some laundry and then definitely hit the books! I'll go as far as I can tomorrow sola and if I hit any snags (about an 90% chance forecast possibility) then I'll PM you. I'd do some quick terminator things but I'm on my R51e and I'm just about to hit the hay.

*yawn*

Once again thanks thanks thanks!
