Not sure what happened, but my Eee 701 with #! 9.04 and 2.6.30 kernel is losing functionality.
partially solved 1. Conky and Leafpad no longer runs.
solved 2. Sound no longer works despite being turned on 100%.
3. I deleted a couple experimental kernels, 2.6.31.1 and 2.6.32rc1, but they still show up in Grub2. 2.6.31.1 even still shows up in menu.lst
4. not getting wireless working in wicd
Any help is appreciated. I don't know why any of this happened.

hmmm
well i dont know about the rest but startupmanager should be able to sort out your grub setup
does your ~/.conkyrc actually exist or is nano just not finding it?

What kind of things did you do the day before the system went poof-ed? Did you install anything? Update anything? etc?

Which icon theme are you using? Try changing to back to Tango. Also try changing your GTK theme to something else.
As for your conky, post the configuration file. Maybe something is wrong with it.

I added the mplayer repo, installed gmusicbrowser and mplayer. Nothing seemed to go wrong. I will try uninstalling them.

I haven't changed my gtk theme though I did add two icons to Adeskbar from black-white style 2 (found via Adeskbar thread). My conkyrc seems to no longer exist as all I get in my text editor is a blank screen after opening it.

Could you try changing it anyways (Openbox menu > Preferences > User Interface Settings) and see if you still have problems with Leafpad.

Maybe download a new conky config and see if it works.

Have you run out of disk space?
Try 'df' command in a terminal.

I'm at 74% on my rootfs, which is okay with me.
anonymous,
I tried different gtk themes, but leafpad is still not responding. Strange how my old conkyrc is gone, but I'm able to run conky with a fresh config.
after reinstallating leafpad I'm getting the following error in the terminal:
leafpad
/usr/share/themes/Murrina-Tangoesque/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:63: Murrine configuration option "hilight_ratio" will be deprecated in future releases. Please use "highlight_shade" instead.

gmusicbrowser seems to be the cause of my sound issues. Removing it solves the problem, but I really want to keep it installed. I'll keep playing with it and see what happens.
Any ideas on how I can get wicd to work? I've installed it, but it doesn't notice my atheros card.

I'm afraid your best and easiest solution is to reinstall - unless someone else has an easy way to fix your problem.
Just my 2 cents.

I'll wait to upgrade #! to 9.10 before reinstalling as I need it on a daily basis (my main pc currently).
Can't for the life of me figure out why deleted kernels still show up in grub (they are both newer than 2.6.30) or why I can't use gmusicbrowser. I love gmusicbrowser, but after I disconnect/reconnect my external usb drive with all my music I lose all sound on the sytem. It appears to be some sort of insane resource conflict. Only way to get the sound working again is to uninstall gmusicbrowser and restart.

The extra kernels probably show up because they are still listed in /boot/grub/menu.lst
Try editing menu.lst. You can just delete those extra kernel entries.

Hello again. I've decided to give Wicd another go. I'm using 1.5.9 in #! 9.04 and unable to connect to wireless networks on Eee 701 after following this guide:http://wiki.geteasypeasy.com/How_to_use_Wicd_instead_of_Network_Manager
I'm trying to connect to WEP passphrase and this is the output.
Wireless networks show up, but I'm unable to connect to them.
Current setup:
wlan0 -wext
eth0
btw just wondering if I should setup my autostart.sh differently
