what about moving all of these related threads into the development section Devel: CrunchBang 12 "Janice"?
and just rename it to devel: community jessie

I just want to say I'd like to be a [insertdistronamehere] Constellation whenever the option becomes available.

OK, I guess I'm the one who needs to make an executive decision on the placeholder name. Let's go with TinkerBox...and not mention any Disney connection to that.
Incidentally, for anyone confused about chillicampari's suggestion of Bunsen, I'd recommend cross-referencing that with the release names of Debian-based CrunchBang.

Damn.
Yeah, then no IRC.
Then let's organise the whole procedure?
We need a work plan, some questions might be:
What needs to be done? What groups do we have?
Who leads the groups? Who decides? Who organizes workflow in them? (Top Down Structure)
Who manages the whole procedure?
I think for the first point we had already a list somewhere.
Who wants to take responsibility for a certain area? These persons should be already familiar with the topic and should be familiar with getting shit thrown at them for no reason etc (that's the internet...
) and all that other stuff.
We could open some threads for these people, for the beginning at least. Useful might be a working forum later maybe, when it gets a little more complex.
So let's seat people on the driving seats, I want to start coding.

Sounds interesting. Might have to make up a special star map to match though.

I just want to say that I fully support the sentiments in the op and that I would add that #! is one of the more enjoyable distros I have tried and that there is no point in trying to change (break) what is not broken already. Whatever comes next I will still call #! and I would suggest it continues to do what #! has always done so well, the welcoming community and nicely preconfigured openbox environment. Little things like a new name or where the dev takes place don't really matter, the only thing that matters is picking up the pieces Ceremonial left behind and make sure such a great disto doesn't vanish or splinter into several lesser distros.

...then probably noticed this post moments later. (Who among us hasn't done this kind of thing on forums though?
)
Forget TinkerBox. In the other end/beginning/name thread, people are gathering around the Bunsen Labs banner.
EDIT: ...but in my "copious free time" I might work on something a bit more bloaty, which I'll call ( )( ) and pronounce "plot".

johnraff wrote:^^yeh I think when pvsage for example talks about using lxde, he's using that as an example of something that's already working, so it can be taken apart to help see how something like Waldorf might be made on Jessie. Last week I installed xfce-jessie with the same pupose. Ultimately, it will come down to building up from zero and adding the needed apps, to keep things as clean as possible.

Agreeing on this and have been thinking we need to start peeking into the #! iso from initial boot on up to see how Phillip did it. It is a good idea to figure out app selection, theming etc because it will all become important but just as important is the low-level under-the-hood stuff that goes on with #! from the very start. Just looking at the Waldorf repos hints to me that Phillip did a bunch more than we ever paid attention too. Maybe I am wrong, but my thinking leads me to believe we need to analyze what already exists, compare it to Debian netinst and figure out how we can automate bringing a system up.
nice to hear the voice of reason again (and people plus-oneing it).
does that mean the real work is about to start?
i suppose it will not happen on a forum thread?
have we contacted corenominal to ask what he has floating around that we can use?
can we re-use #! repos? can we keep on using #! repo server (probably not since changes have to be made)?

The real work has already begun; I know at least hhh and johnraff have posted about their latest attempts at building something CrashPow-y from the ground up, and I plan to try my hand at it this weekend.
I was initially planning to use a local copy of the Waldorf repo as a roadmap, but it's starting to look like most of what we need is in /etc/skel.

Hello,
I would like to contribute to the next generation CB, allthough I am more of a web developper.
This might be a stupid question but can we not share the install script codes on github ?
Allso I would be happy to help in installing the community infrastructure (website, forms etc...)

A CrunchDE would be awesome, and it wouldn't even need to be officially blessed by Debian. Someone else could put up a repo so that people could add it to their sources, and install it. For the most part it is only scripts. It could also be just a simple DEB.package, dropping the scripts, backgrounds, themes and icons in the appropriate locations.
The only issue is that someone needs to store and maintain the Crunchbang-spesific stuff. Because some of the current stuff will break eventually. By gtk-upgrades, by systemd-upgrades, and other upgrades that may cause issues.
I myself don't need a CrunchbangDE. But it would be a great service for those that aren't able to do it themselves. Because, there are reasons for some to use Crunchbang, even if they are not at all interested in Linux. Not all are rich and able to get the new hardware and afford new windows-distributions.
It's perfetly legit to want Crunchbang just because it's lightweight and runs well on older hardware. Because it brings life to the older laptops. Just because someone is poor, it doesn't mean that they should have to be very interested in thinkering with linux, to get something where they can do tweets, facebook, check email and stream live television. For many people, Windows or Mac aren't a options at all, and Ubuntu and LM and all the big easy ones requires to much resources to run well on low specs.
That's why there really is a need for something light and functional OOTB. Not to serve us linux-geeks, because we will always get by. No, there is a actual need for something like Crunchbang to serve ordinary people that can't afford the newest of everything.
Just my thoughts
