ive been looking for a new distro to use for a couple months now. i think i finally found it. ive been using several different versions of linux mint the last couple years and they were awesome. im a big fan of linux mint but i always wanted a openbox version of it and they stopped making the lxde version.
ive always liked openbox. i never needed all that extra gui stuff from unity or gnome 3 that slowed my pc down. my computer isnt so old but not so new either. i have a amd triple core with 4 gigs of ram ssd HD. the actual pc is 6 years old but my asus board has made it so i can upgrade a lot. still i want to use my cpu on programs not on the system gui.
what actually landed me here was i wanted to build a minimal ubuntu and then add openbox. well i got installed but it didnt work the way i wanted it and didnt have enough know how to customize it the way i wanted it. so i scrapped it and tried crunchbang again
i used crunchbang a couple years for a few months but something happened one day and my system went down. i couldnt figure out how to get it back up so thats when i left to linux mint.
since i last used it i am very impressed with how polished it is now. the default layout has a very nice look to it. ive never had much luck with debian distros but im gonna try again because i really like this distro. i mostly had issues installed newer programs and such. hopefully i can figure it out better this time
anyway just wanted to say great job on the distro!

Hi there runpc2deth...welcome to the #! forum!
Back when you were using CrunchBang before, it was probably built on Ubuntu...since then it's moved to Debian stable, so the packages are going to be older now than you were used to back in the Ubuntu days. Of course, there is info on this board that would allow you to change your sources list to unstable (sid), and you could have the newest packages.
Anyway, I noticed your thread title because I just blew out my #! install and installed Linux Mint again yesterday, because I am once again frustrated trying to get #! to browse files on my Windows server. With Mint or Xubuntu (on my laptop), it's just a matter of a few edits in smb.conf and I'm set.
Well that's probably too much about me...but the great thing about this forum...they don't feel like everyone must use #!, or OB for that matter.

hey Neil
i guess that's the great thing about linux so many different versions we all get one that fits our needs. im a very basic user. web music video
doesnt take much to keep me happy. i run as many apps out of my browser as i can. i like cloud stuff. im curious why don't you use a linux server?

Welcome to #!
Used to have, at least, one machine running LMDE_Xfce but everything is #! now.
Last massive update (900mb) broke flash and I fixed it by installing the Debian and removing the Mint package. In the forums, everybody agreed that it wouldn't have worked on a regular Mint install. Kinda knew, then, that it was time to move on.
Still suggest Mint for the new user, but...

hey Neil....im curious why don't you use a linux server?
Laziness....I claim to be too busy with other projects, work, life, etc., but mainly laziness. Someday I plan to set up a Linux server, but what I've got now is not really a server, it's just the Windows machine we have been using for several years, so most of our files are on it, and I experiment with Linux on various other laptops and desktop machines.
That's why I still like beginner friendly distros, even though I've been dabbling in Linux for 10+ years...I've never had the time to really learn what I need to know to make the switch to exclusive Linux use. Plus, I must use Windows at my job, so have to keep up a working knowledge of newer versions of Windows.
