i installed crunchbang!
i'm using an external monitor on my laptop that has a different resolution than the built-in.
the graphics looked horrible, plus a few pixels were cut off on all sides.
i had it working before so i thought, graphic driver problem!
but - tadaa - here's what really happened:
the monitor has a button that starts an "auto configuration".
pressing the button while the default, gray and low contrast crunchbang desktop is visible has a desastrous effect.
solution:
open some website with nice dark text on a whitish background, make it fullscreen or maximised, then press "auto configuration"
---> voilá!
- just thought i'd share this one. it is crunchbang specific, no?

^ Another option: Hide open applications, set the desktop image to something small or transparent, change (temporarily) the background color to something whitish, auto-adjust monitor, change wallpaper and background back.
And...no, not CrunchBang-specific. You'll get this any time you try to auto-adjust a VGA monitor with a dark image.
