Here is a wiki that answers and compares them and several others

Personally I use abiword & gnumeric, I have no need to use libreoffice, whether you will be satisfied with those apps, only you can answer.  Test yourself, they are free, purge what you don't want.

Re: libreoffice (calc) vs gnumeric

Libre Office will save/open files with passwords. Gnumeric opens them, but won't save them again with password in Excel or Libre/Open Office format.
Nice example is my password list kept on a flash-drive. NOT leaving the cave without that being locked down!

Aside from that, gnumeric is lighter, and not Open Java thingie installed...

Gnumeric and Abiword run on the netbook, whereas Libre Office runs on machines with 3GB+ RAM.

Re: libreoffice (calc) vs gnumeric

If you make a file in either program, barring anything crazy like macro's, Google Docs plays well with anything saved as an excel file.

www.portableapps.com also has mobile versions of either for use on a flash-drive when away from home.
This has saved my bacon many times...

Re: libreoffice (calc) vs gnumeric

For my science classes I had to use Calc. Gnumeric for lightweight and personal stuff like when on the bus or something and want to conserve battery power (just sort of assume it consumes less than calc). Gnumeric didn't work so well for me in lab. There's also an alternative called Caligra suite... looks pretty. I found it kind of buggy in wheezy.

Re: libreoffice (calc) vs gnumeric

I'm not sure Gnumeric is even remotely applicable in a serious scenario.

Re: libreoffice (calc) vs gnumeric

I prefer Calc. I find Gnumeric a bit chunky and childlike looking..

But they both do the job.
