Training wheels off

Hey all, I've been using #! for about a year, but limited to a virtual machine. Decided today to wipe XP off my laptop (Dell Latitude E6410) and have it run #! only. today.. I installed Statler from a LiveCD, and am currently upgrading to Waldorf using http://crunchbanglinux.org/forums/post/213755/#p213755

And it went surprisingly well! Things working OOTB:

* Wireless
* touchpad
* that nub thing
* bluetooth
* Fn+up/Fn+down/Fn+left for brightness adjust

A few things aren't, and if I can't figure them out, expect more forum posts (and a bit apprehensive about adding monitors/docking stations).

* Standby/hibernate (Win-x hibernate just locks, pm-hibernate does nothing, pm-standby works)
* Various other Fn key combinations
* Xfce power manager keeps telling me I'm on battery, and shifting notification items left
* Wifi light flickers
* volume up/down/mute

Thanks, Crunchbang, for helping me realize it was Gnome, KDE, and graphical configuration wizarsd that I disliked, not GNU/Linux!

Re: Training wheels off

Hi there nsp, and welcome to the site!

I would suggest that you install directly from Waldorf instead of upgrading from Statler.  Others have mentioned on the site that the upgrade process is sometimes less than smooth.  Some of your issues may be non-existant in a pristine Waldorf install.

Re: Training wheels off

Ah, oh well. Waldorf fixed hibernation, but also did some funky things. I'm starting a fresh install now, hopefully I don't have to reencrypt the HD, because that took forever.

Welcome to #! smile

Gotta say, a fresh install of Waldorf is how I would go as well...

Re: Training wheels off

OK, so I did have to re-encrypt the drive, and it took longer than it ever had before, but now it's done, and I'm glad I did! Things that now work:

* Suspend (and glad to see it's replaced hibernate in cb-exit)
* A few more Fn key combinations (not all, but enough)
* Xfce power manager keeps telling me I'm on battery, and shifting notification items left
* Wifi light flickers
* volume up/down/mute

So...everything! And of course it's all much more slick.

Welcome! Enjoy your new system, and please don't hesitate to ask for help here - no matter how 'elementary' your question may be.
